Guest guest
Faye: We have been GFCF with our son for 5 years (he is 9 now). It helps him in many ways. He is MUCH less hyper on the diet, and able to focus and pay attention better. He has significant gut issues (on Pentasa for inflammation of his gut, and had an ulcer at one point), and GFCF helps with those issues as well. We have not seen any " miracle " results as far as gaining speech, etc., but it is definitely worth it for our son to maintain this diet. It is not very difficult to do, unless eating out. There is a great guide to getting started at TACA web site, and another good web site, GFCFDiet.com. Please respond to autism@ya hoogroups.com Hi, I am new to the group. I live in Rincon, outside of Savannah. I have 3.5 yr old girl dx with PDD/NOS, non verbal but oh so sweet. Tried Risperdal for 4 months, and it did NOT help. I wll see developmental spec. this week and am going to ask to just go ahead and try ritalin or something like it. But in the meantime, My husband is pushing me to start the gluten and dairy free diet.... but I am skeptical. It doesn't help that I come from a medical family. What are your experiences with it? should I wait and see what happens with the ritalin first, or just jump feet first into the diet? Is it worth the effort? thanks, Faye
Guest guest
Hi i put my son on diet last august, he's 9. he spoke a little before, but definitely i see progress, slow, but he can contentrate and focus more and seems more connected. also, it is not such much hassle, specially if she's so young and you can change her eating habits. i also suggest you can do the test to check on her candida, go to great plains lab web page or great smoky mountains, they both do it. also, if you do not find a market near by, you can buy your products by internet. go ahead with the diet. patricia Faye <altair005@...> wrote: Hi, I am new to the group. Guest guest
What is the goal for putting her on Ritalin or Risperdol? What did the doctor feel you would gain. Is there significant hyperactivity. I am just curious. Without having a lot of info I just didn't understand the reason for that. I personally would try the diet because it can not hurt and if you have gains which many people do then that is great. My son started the diet at the same age as your daughter and he is almost six. He is still on it because I just don't want to rock the boat at this point. He made enormous progress from healing his gut and the diet, supplementation, chelation, and therapies made the difference. He really gained social language for he had serious echolalia only w/speech with the Meythl B12 injections. It was a wow for us! The diet was gradual and part of the process of healing. I do have a friend who started her 4 year old on the diet and saw major behavioral changes, sleep changes, and more overall connected to others right away. I was really shocked because I had only read of responses like that and never saw with my own eyes. He also was only eating a few foods and after a week started to eat more and different foods. It is really interesting. Didn't work that way for my son. hth Annemarie On 4/17/07, Cowen <.Cowen@...> wrote: Faye:We have been GFCF with our son for 5 years (he is 9 now). It helps him inmany ways. Guest guest
We started my son on the casein free diet, we are slowly going to eliminate gluten. We also put him on a multivitamin with magnesium and fish oil supplements. We have seen amazing changes in his verbal ability alone. He is 2 and was non-verbal. Now he has 3-4 words consistently. We had to do this gradually but it has worked for us. Best of luck with your daughter. Also to note: We did consult a nutritionist before doing this. Guest guest
Wow thanks for the responses! The reason we tried risperdal, was because my daughter is hyperactive and in her own world, often. My main concern these days is with maximizing her ability to receive input, whether at school (PSI) or at home. I mean, I can't even sit and read a book to her because she just won't even look at the pages. So, I asked dev. specialist about ritalin and she wanted to try Risperdal first. The reason I am considering the gulten/casein free diet is for calming those hyperactive symptoms. Sorry, I didn't give so much detail earlier so to spare your from my ramblings. But, I am glad to see that it really has worked for all of you. > > > > Hi, I am new to the group. I live in Rincon, outside > > of Savannah. Guest guest
Hi, We had my son on the diet (gfcf) for 1 year, some time ago. Since then, more products have become available in stores and it's much easier to find food for your child to eat than it used to be. You might find that it's not as difficult as you may think to put your daughter on it. And even though it only made marginal improvements for my son, it did make some improvements and kept him off pharmaceuticals for a longer time. What have you got to lose? Guest guest
I would suggest that if you are going to try the diet that sooner is better than later. We tried it with our son a few years ago ( when he was approx. 8 yrs old ). It was alittle difficult (not impossible, but definately hard) since he was soooo set in his ways concerning what he likes and doesn't like with foods.....we stuck with it for 3 months. He ended up losing 9 lbs because he just refused to eat some of the foods (and 9 lbs is ALOT when you only weigh 60 lbs to begin with) -- and at that point we didn't see enough of a change to keep with it. We have kept up a mostly casein free diet though. Anyway -- my point is...i'm not trying to discourage you from trying the diet...I think you should try everything as long as it doesn't hurt your child...I am saying that try it when they are young and not so set in their ways regarding food choices!! Good luck! Lou RE: Re: gluten/cassein diet help--- does it work? is it worth the hassle? Hi, We had my son on the diet (gfcf) for 1 year, some time ago. Guest guest
My daughter is now 6 years old & we began the CF part of the diet a month before she was diagnosed which was a week after she turned 2. Within a week we noticed normal BM which was huge since she had been suffering from constipation for over a year. At the time she wasn't speaking, but we had been trying to teach her sign language with the help of our S.T. In the second week of the diet she began using the few signs we had taught her on her own to communicate. Before then the only time she would make the signs is when we prompted her to do so. So we knew right away that it was working. A few months later we did some testing & found out even on the CF diet she was scoring in the high range of normal for casein, basically if she had not been on the diet her numbers would have been higher. As for the gluten she scored in the normal range so we didn't have to do that part of the diet. After being on the diet for about a year we began using enzymes. We also noticed marked improvement after starting enzymes. We slowly began introducing casein back into her diet after being on enzymes for a year, but kept her on the enzymes. She did great & eventually we were able to go off the diet. So my suggestion is try the diet, it will not harm her & it's really not as hard as you think once you get the hang of it. Today it's easier to find cf/gf foods. You may also want to consider a peptide test before you start the diet to see if her levels are elevated. Not everyone responds to the diet, but it's worth a shot if it means you can help your child without long term prescription drugs. Wendie > > > > > > Hi, I am new to the group.
