Guest guest
I'm so happy for you Vicki. That is certainly something to be very proud of!! I can relate to what you're feeling because it's just as you said--when you see your child able to handle a situation that you feared he couldn't handle...it gives you the feeling that the world has opened up to you and there's alot more possibilities out there for vacations or whatever other experiences you want for your kids. A few years ago we took our first trip to Disneyworld--drove about 16 hours and I was so nervous about how our boys(who are both on the spectum) would handle it. Well, they did great! In fact, they actually did better than our NT girls. The next year we really " went for it " and flew everyone up to Seattle, Washington where my brother-in-law lives. Again, the boys did great. Actually, we've discovered that our boys really seem to enjoy vacations--especially Joe. The major problem with him is returning home--he never wants to!! Thanks so much for sharing this experience with us all--we're so happy for you. a A proud mom I have to brag a little today. I took my 12 year old son to the beach for the very first time yesterday and he did very well. He sat in the water for three and a half hours happily throwing water. My two daughters got to enjoy themselves for a change. It was a real family outing that I don't think we have ever gotten to experience before. I am so proud and excited that things went so well. It gives me the courage to try other things in the future. Vicki King Mom to , and Katelyn -- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus (http://www.grisoft.com). Guest guest
Yippee!! That's great news. My little guy (6 yrs) loves the beach (well, just about anything involving water). We took him to Sea World Texas a couple of weeks ago, and that was a great experience for us. He really enjoyed the water park, rides, and feeding the dolphins. The shows didn't quite capture his attention to the degree I had hoped, but, overall, he did really well. Geraldine Houston, TX Vicki wrote: I have to brag a little today. Guest guest
I'm glad to hear that you all are having great experiences with your children. We took our 6-year-old daughter canoeing last weekend. She absolutely loved it. She hung over the edge of the canoe with her hand in the water for almost the entire trip. She loved getting out and swimming and playing with the rocks, too. She even tried rowing, but we were afraid we would lose our oar! Of course, the river was relatively shallow and slow running and she and her eight year old brother wore lifejackets at all times. We all had a really good time. Guest guest
Another proud Mom...today my 5 year old autistic son paid me a surprise visit at work. My husband picked him up from summer camp and brought him by the office. I heard a child's voice from a distance and knew immediately it was my son. My husband directed him over to my desk and when he saw me he was so excited and yelled " mommy you're here. " He sat down on my lap and said, " wow, mommy look at my pictures! " I have about a dozen pictures of him in various frames on my desk--it's more like a shrine. He said, " look I'm drinking juice and I'm eating pizza " (a photo of him at Chuck-e-Cheeses'). Everyone who walked by my desk stopped to say hello to him, and he kept asking everyone what's your name? and he was so overly friendly. My coworkers were so taken by him and some know he is autistic but hadn't seen him in a long time. After my son and husband left the office a couple of people said to me--you can't tell anything is wrong with him. Of course I told them, oh there is just spend more than 30 minutes around him and you'll be able to see he's special. It's been about 18 months since my son last visited the office and the last time he was there he had a total meltdown and wanted to leave and cried inconsolably until we walked out. He's come along way and we too are traveling by plane next month to California and I know he's going to do okay. Treatment, ST, PT, OT, interventions and supplements seem to be working. Thank you for sharing your good stories.

Guest guest
It is so nice to read about our children enjoying themselves. I know how happy the families are when they can go and have a positive experience together. We are packing to leave to take our 12 year old to Camp again and he will be gone for five days and nights. This is his fouth year to go and he looks forward to it each year as he looks at the pictures over and over during the year. When we get there on Friday to pick him up he is always ready to home and we have yet to see the closing ceremonies.

Guest guest
Belynda, where did you guys go canoeing? My 6-year old would probably enjoy that too - he loves the water! Kim
Guest guest
We are from St. Louis, so we went on the Black River. It is south of St. Louis. When we got home my husband looked on the internet and found several " floats " as they are called here. You pay to rent the canoe and they take you to a drop off point and you " float " down the river to a pick up point. You can also canoe on lakes, but you have to row a lot more there! To find places near you, just try various searches on the net, canoeing, rafting, floating, etc and input your region, too. We have found " floats " that range from slow ones, like ours, to whitewater rafting (not too many of those in Missouri, though.) If you are in the St. Louis Region, we just heard of a place called the Bird's Nest lodge that has float trips. Hope this helps.
