ssd is notincome based....and yes spouses income from spouse count toward

ssi.....if ur spouse works a minimumwage...u probably will not qualify...

Hi ,

My last day of FT work was May 5th, 2008. I have been trying to look for

work, in fact, in November I had a very PT job, 2 hours a day 3 days a week,

that was awful, physically because the office was cold and the boss well,

was a nightmare....but anyway.....it lasted less than 4 weeks. I applied in

December 2008 and got my denial in February. Within a week, I filed my

appeal and had a lawyer. I also had letters of support from 2 Drs. stating

my medical conditions and how any work can affect them and vice versa. I

submitted everything right away, etc. I was scared today when I got a call

this am, I had no idea what that could be about !

Anyway, I consider myself semi-retired, I'd like to try work again someday,

I hope I can, but for now, I'm just so relieved, that for a while, maybe I

don't have to worry so much about everything. I won't have health

insurance, so I'll have to apply for Mass Health. One step at a time....LOL

Your spouses income does not affect Social Security. It is based on YOUR income

at the time of disability. This is what you have paid all that money for- it is

insurance that you have already paid.....

No, it has nothing to do with any other person. It's all decided on your own

personal record of past employment. Other income will only come into play if

you try for Medicaid (SSI) or other local programs.

I am on a State health insurance program and it has been fine even though they

are probably going to cut me off in a few months because I am disabled and

receive SSDI. I know it doesn't make sense, and you don't qualify for Medicare

for two years, which makes even less sense. Anyway, in Washington State no one

likes the basic health system but by law physicians cannot turn you down, so I

found that I'm treated like a second class citizen, you may need to prepare

yourself for that. My attitude is " screw you )*($*% & & 03!!! I didn't ask for

this! " I think it's a healthy attitude. On top of having RA, being disabled, and

everything else I gotta deal with your ignorant butt attitude because you can't

make a " big " profit on me! Usually it's the front office staff, I found the

doctors really don't care, at least more than less of them.

Hi Sue:

Thanks for the congrats. Florida in the summer is hot. I thank God for

AC here. Are you going on a vacation here? The Gulf beaches are wonderful

here. The beach I go to has shade, plus, I use a big beach umbrella. I am

dealing with skin cancer. Sure miss the sun and my great tans!!! What part of

Florida are you visiting? I do know the weather here is so much better for my

RA. Everytime I have gone home to Mass. by the second day my RA begins to

flare. It doesn't matter what month or the time of year.

Where do you live in Mass.? I sure miss my Cape Cod.

Hi Barbara,

I live in North Carolina, not Massachusetts. If I go to Florida, we

will probably stay in Ormond Beach for a few days and in Orlando for a

few days. I would much rather go in the winter, but my son teaches in

the winter.

How many quarters you need to qualify depends on your age (see below). If he

does qualify it is likely that someone age 24 will be referred to vocational

rehab to be trained for a job they can perform .... that is, of course, unless

he is severely disabled by SSA standards.

The number of work credits you need for disability benefits depends on your age

when you become disabled.

The rules for how much work you need to qualify for disability benefits are as

follows:

Before age 24--You may qualify if you have 6 credits earned in the 3-year period

ending when your disability starts.

Age 24 to 31--You may qualify if you have credit for working half the time

between age 21 and the time you become disabled. For example, if you become

disabled at age 27, you would need credit for 3 years of work (12 credits) out

of the past 6 years (between ages 21 and 27).

Age 31 or older--In general, you need to have the number of work credits shown

in the chart below. Unless you are blind, you must have earned at least 20 of

the credits in the 10 years immediately before you became disabled.

I filed for SS at the end of last year. I went online and filed. I printed every

page I did before I went to the next. This way I had all my copies and a back up

for later if I needed it. I applied for my back (degenerative disk) and mental

(my son at 5 months old died). I have not worked for 3 1/2 years due to my back

and just couldn't bring myself to go to work and leave my kids. When I put in

all the info I focused more on my back and put the mental second. Well I got a

letter months later that said I was not able to get it. I then took all my

papers to a SS lawyer. He went the mental route. He said because I didn't go to

the same exact doctor 3 times in the past year is why they didn't even consider

it. They did with the help of my lawyer find that I would get it for mental. The

lawyer did give me a paper that I took to my doctor to fill out to say how I am

with my mental issues. This paper you can find online to give to your doctor. It

will help if you can get your doctor to fill it out. It will also help if your

doctor takes good notes on your chart. With my case SS never have me back pay so

I never got anything but my monthly pay. There is a 5 month wait period so they

found me disabled right at that 5 month window. When talking to SS and the

lawyer they think it was because of the economy. To save money if you will. The

down fall to this is I have to wait 2 years before my Medicare kicks in because

they didn't find me disabled from back when everything started. My lawyer wanted

to fight the disability date but I didn't want to cause I didn't want to chance

getting denied. The lawyer did tell me if I'm on any social networks like

Facebook, twitter, or the kinds like that to get off. The reason is because if

you are in pain and they see you on there they think you are on all day and you

don't have pain cause you can sit and type. I know it sounds funny but I see his

point. I just changed my name and told everyone to follow my new name. I also

used a different email for everything. I never applied for RA because I was just

told I have it. When I get reviewed I will put the RA in but for now I will sit

here trying to figure out more about RA and how it affects me. I'm not sure if I

helped any but please let me know if you have any questions. I just might know.

I had to take the applying route on my own. I wish I had someone to talk to or

help me. My hubby was here but not much help. Lol.
