Hi everyone,Things are going really well. I did another 50 miler yesterday. The first 35 miles were local, flat and at a leisurely pace. This is because my riding buddy had just done a hilly 100 miler the day before. She's my hero! We rode a circuitous path through the nearby flatlands, and then we did a steep climb in the afternoon.

Yesterday's climb was a really big deal. This is the hill next to my house. It's a 1000+ foot climb, and I've been quite intimidated by it. When I first got my road bike, I attempted it on a Sunday morning. I didn't even make it 1/4 of the way up because I thought my heart and lungs were going to explode. I ended up stopping at Lone Tree Cemetery, which I felt would be a good place to drop dead. Well, I surprised myself yesterday. I didn't break any records, but my HR never topped out. My legs kept going, I never was out of breath, and although it was TOUGH, we made it to the top. WIN! It was a 3000 calorie ride.

Next week's ride is in Point Reyes. I have to eat clean and train wisely this week, because they tell me will be the toughest thing I've ever done. By the way, Kettlebells really enhance the cycling. You need lots of strength in your hips, glutes, abs, and low back for climbing. I could feel the same muscles being used during the climb. My shoulders and back got a workout too. I have a pump in my shoulders and arms.

Happy workouts!

Thanks! What's humbling is that this was my buddy's recovery ride! She's my age, too. Anybody can do this. You just do it regularly, and you get there. On Mon, May 3, 2010 at 3:40 PM, Darcy Ledman <exercise.junkie@...> wrote:

50 miles.. wow, and up 1000 feet in elevation?  You must have felt really victorious, I know I would!  Love that you say the kettlebells are a great way to cross train for these rides :)  I heart kettlebells!
