I would expect them to use the same organizational plan, which is what caused the problem for us. We did all of the usual screening and references, the visits and observations to be sure we were satisfied. We tried them out for Parent/Teacher conference day and all went well. Everything seemed fine, so we placed our daughter there for the Christmas break. Something happened which we didn't consider and they never mentioned if it did occur to them. Apparently, many of their client children are taken home over holidays and spring breaks by parents who vacation or have off from work. Since the classes are much smaller because of this, ALL remaining children who are school-aged were placed in one large room together, no matter their age. They were " supervised " by the couple of teenagers chosen to keep on staff that week. By the third day, our Kindergartner had picked up things from the oldest elementary kids that it took us the rest of the school year to deprogram. She was cruelly encouraged in these behaviors by older children who thought it funny to egg her on, while all she saw was that everyone paid attention to her if she did what they wanted. No one on staff ever mentioned that things would be different over holidays than we were seeing on our visits, and it was our first time to try the services of a group daycare. We pulled her immediately and never went back, but the damage was done. She continued to be humiliated for months afterward by the children who had been present and were also students at her school. Something to look into carefully at any daycare, as I found out to my daughter's cost. Sandi

Guest guest
Hi , So sorry that you're having such problems locating a place for your son. I hope you make a complaint to the day care licensing agency. Try calling Initiatives for Children. They are a pretty good referral service and they can tell you how to go through the process of checking to see if a place has any complaints against them. Also, let them know you have a special needs child and are looking for a place that can accomodate them. Day Care Problems My son is 5 years old and starting kindergarten next month, however, I am desperately looking for quality child care for those times when there are teacher work/inservice days so the kids have a school holiday. I received the school year calendar and there's a bunch of holidays...more than I can take off from work to stay home with him. He has been going to the same registered family day home since he was 10 months old but I can't keep him there any longer because I can't stand the woman who runs the place. Recently, I walked in early to pick up my son and I over heard her yelling at someone--she was saying in a very stern voice, " shut up and and stop crying " she was talking to my son! She knows he's autistic and has been generally good with him but she has no understanding or knowledge of sensory problems, special issues, etc, at best she seems to tolerate his differences but has not made any effort to understand the challenges kids with autism face. I'll get to the point now, does anyone out there know of quality child care, which takes kids who are not full time & school aged with disabilities? Can anyone recommend something? I am looking for care around the westside of Houston from Highway 6 east to say Wilcrest. Has anyone ever taken their child to Children's World Learning Center on Whittington Drive? or La Petite Briar Forest location? Has anyone ever used who runs child care from her home off of Memorial Drive? It was so hard to concentrate at work today knowing my son is in this wicked person's home, he's moderate to high functioning so everyday I ask him how his day went and if he had fun. He isn't complaining so back he goes tomorrow, yuck.
