Eldred,

remember that exercise is only 20% of the weight loss dynamic -- 80% is your

diet (your choices/selection of what you eat).   to have lost 4.5 lbs by just

walking - you would have had to burned off 15,750 calories ... and that would

have been a whole lot of walking!

Calories burned per mile by walking

Speed/Pounds 100 lb 120 lb 140 lb 160 lb 180 lb 200 lb 220 lb 250 lb 275 lb 300

lb

2.0mph 57 68 80 91 102 114 125 142 156 170

2.5mph 55 65 76 87 98 109 120 136 150 164

3.0mph 53 64 74 85 95 106 117 133 146 159

3.5mph 52 62 73 83 94 104 114 130 143 156

4.0mph 57 68 80 91 102 114 125 142 156 170

4.5mph 64 76 89 102 115 127 140 159 175 191

5.0mph 73 87 102 116 131 145 160 182 200 218

I think you probably made some great (or better) food choices, plus you probably

didn't have your usual snack or treat foods around

I have a desk job as well and there are tons of little techniques to add steps

to your day (parking at the far end of the lot at work or if you take a bus,

getting off a stop before your usual, walking up the stairs, printing to a

network printer that's further away, walking for a portion of your lunch hour,

etc.) - also wearing a pedometer for a period of time would be an eyeopener as

to how physically active you are -- I started walking with about 3,000 steps a

day and now regularly do 13,000 - 17,000 (I also walk for an hour after work,

once I get home so it's not all walking around the office!)

I was on a trip this past weekend to Chicago. When we left Friday morning, I

weighed 214. When I weighed myself back at home Monday morning, I was down to

209.5. After a couple days home, I was back to 212.5. Sigh...

I don't think my intake was vastly different over the weekend, but we walked a

lot Sunday(sightseeing), and to a lesser extent Friday. The trick now is to

find time(and motivation) to get sufficient exercise in daily life, since I have

a desk job. I haven't figured that out yet.

Hi Eldred,

I agree with Colleen... it's not likely that the exercise caused the weight

loss. I'm guessing that you probably just saw fluctuations in water, because

you probably didn't cut your food intake by 15 750 calories in 3 days... which

is what you would have needed to do, at a minimum, to see 4.5 pounds of true fat

loss. Even with a combination of diet and exercise, it would be very difficult

to achieve those numbers.

Don't be bummed by the scale. The fluctuations can drive you insane - they

certainly did for me! Just take good care of yourself, eat healthy, move your

body in a way that feels good, and the scale will eventually catch up to the

healthy you.

With love,

Yuna

Eldred,

I hear you! I went on a trip for 1 week in January. I walked a lot but thought I

was eating a lot too. No calorie counting, eating pretty much what I wanted but

in moderation and came back, weighed myself and I had lost 5 pounds. A week

later I had gained it back!!! Was it the walking? Was I in reality eating less?

Was it a welcome change in my routine? All three? How did I lose those 5 pounds

in a week WITHOUT even trying!!!! And why did I then gain them back?? Sigh......

So frustrating.....

You know I usually lose weight on the weekends even though we eat out all most

all weekend. I get way more sleep and whole lot less stress and I eat better

when I eat when I am hungry and not trying to keep 12 children and a family feed

four meals a day. I think new shoes are going to help me.
