Guest guest
My 8 yr old is another story. We first knew something was amiss when he entered school.Back then I didnt know what things to look out for. He had some speech problems but did outgrow them. The issues got worse as he got older. He was diagnosed with ADHD a little over a year ago. The school did a psychological on him and said he also had emotional/behavioral disorder. He has seen psychologists and psychiatrists and they agree something else is going on. Against my better judgment i had him put on the ADHD meds and even so he is still hyper. The last time he saw his regular psychiatrist she said that he needed occupational therapy because she suspected Sensory Processing Disorder when I told her some of his symptoms: He is limited with what he will eat, picky about certains kinds of clothing, In hot weather he will wear sweats & vice versa in the winter, He can't stand loud noises, he can pick up something hot and it not register " ouch! " , he is constant running, spinning, exhibits danger seeking behaviors, etc, etc,. His psyciatrist stopped taking his medicaid because they wouldnt pay so he hasnt seen her since DEC last year. I started taking him to his new pediatrician (She is the best!) to get his meds and she said she felt he had PDD. Later his teacher called me and said I should get him checked for Fragile X because he exhibited symptoms. He will get tested this week. Depending on what the results are will determine what to be done next. I plan on taking him to the Emory Autism Center along with my 3 yr old and get them both checked. I feel he needs to see a neurologist to see if he does in fact have SPD so we can go ahead and address it, instead of waiting. Lately he has been having a lot of headaches, I am going to talk to his ped I want an MRI done just in case something is going on inside his brain. This is all so overwhelming at times. I apllied for SSI for him in Dec and got a letter a few weeks back that he was denied. I will appeal this. Unfortunately the only diagnosis he has is the ADHD & emotional behavioral disorder. SSA sent him to one of their docs and this was the one time in a million sat still and behaved, I looked like a paranoid and didnt know what i was talking about mom. It has been said too that he may have ODD as well, he is extremely hateful when hes upset and threatens. Whats up with everyone saying it and just diagnose it already. How many doc am i supposed to take him to before something gets done. Every other psychiatrist ive called wouldnt see him because they felt they werent qualified to take him on. Every day is a real challenge with him, he requires help with such things he should know how to do by myself like homework (he gives me so much hassle getting it done usually not done til 8 or 9 pm. He needs help bathing, by himself he will just sit there and prune up and not use soap or wash hair. He needs help with buttons and zippers. He hates haircuts. He needs help tying his shoelaces, needs detailed directions with supervision. I would like to find how i can help him and hopefully get him off the meds. The only upside is there is some improvement when he is on the meds. I think thats everything, I need all the advice i can get.
