CROI: Studies Advance Development of Rectal Gel and Vaginal Ring Microbicides for HIV Prevention A pair of studies presented in an oral session at the 19th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI 2012) taking place this week in Seattle addressed the safety and acceptability of experimental microbicide preparations. Both studies found the microbicides to be well tolerated and acceptable. CROI: Drug Levels Predict Efficacy in PrEP Trials, Showing Importance of Adherence Two analyses of PrEP studies presented at the 19th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI 2012) this week in Seattle found that drug levels -- and by implication, adherence -- were strongly correlated with protection against HIV infection. CROI: PEPFAR Funding Linked to Lower Death Rate from All Causes in Africa PEPFAR funding for HIV programs lowered the risk of death in countries receiving funds by around 16% between 2004 and 2008, without any clear indication that funding for HIV was having a negative effect on the ability to fight other diseases, Eran Bendavid of Stanford University reported on Wednesday at the 19th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI 2012) this week in Seattle.
