Guest guest
Hi everyone my name is , and my 11 yr son(TWIN) Tyler, has been recently diagnosed with OCD. This has been very hard and confusing for the entire family, especially Tyler. He is very frustrated and confused. Our MD has put him on 10mgs of Prozac. He has been on in for only 9 days, which I am sure it will take a bit longer to work. it seems as if he has gotten worse over the last few days. He has the environmental/germ OCD. It is driving him to the point of having chest pains from so much worry. This has been very difficult for my DH an I, we are mentally and emotionally exhausted. We hope to find him a therapist that help him with this. He doesn't understand, and is frustrated to the point of tears. I plan on reading as much as I can, to help my DS. I want him to be a happy healthy 11 yr old boy, at this point he is not. Thamk you for letting me join all of you, maybe I won't feel so alone. I try to believe He will only give me what I can handle

Guest guest
Hi , Welcome........and you are not alone. Only those of us who have children with OCD can know how debilitating this can be for the WHOLE family. My daughter is 8 years old and was diagnosed at age 5, with symptoms starting at age 3. I just wanted to let you know to give the Prozac a chance. It was a life-saver for us. She still struggles and has meltdowns .......BUT she is functional now. It took time though.......about a month before we saw any change. There is hope. I know the feeling of watching your child suffer and not being able to take it away for them. This is a great group of people, some who have been down this road and are a wealth of knowledge and some who are going down the same road with you right now. Take care, Kath Not only will He only give you what you can handle......He can also turn it around for good for those who love Him! ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
Guest guest
Hi : I too am new at this OCD. It is heartwrenching to watch your son go through this. My son, 13 years old, was diagnosed a couple of months ago by a clinical psychologist. We are trying ERP (exposure response prevention therapy) with him but my son gives us push back on it. So now he is also seeing a psychiatrist. He just started Prozac 3 weeks ago in order to help him with his ERP. 1st week, we gave him 2.5 mg. 2nd week, 5mg. This week, it's 10 mg one day, 5 mg the next day. We see the psych next week. I too thought my son seemed worse on the prozac these past 3 weeks. But i am starting to see it lessen just a little, little bit. But then again it could be the waxing and waning of the disease. Since I just started on this journey, I don't have as much experience to draw on. What I can say is read everything you can get your hands on about the disease. It will help you understand and also give you some suggestions. A book I would recommend is " What to do when your child has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder by Aureen Pinto Wagner. It has helped me tremendously. In the meantime, know that you are not alone in this journey. My prayers are with you and your family. This group is filled with stories of hope. It is helpful to read how others have fought and won. Hang in there. hugs, angela tmills45 <tmills45@...> wrote: Hi everyone my name is , and my 11 yr son(TWIN) Tyler, has been recently diagnosed with OCD. Guest guest
Hi , welcome! Only a minute now but wanted to say regarding the Prozac that sometimes OCD will increase a bit when beginning the medication but should settle back down. How long it will take to begin to help with OCD, well, that differs with each person - I could guess 8 weeks but you might see improvement in 2 or 3 weeks. There's some good books for kids/teens on OCD. Knowing that his " madness " has a name (OCD!) may help your son some. By the way, my OCDer is age 18 now and a twin (not identical). > > Hi everyone my name is , and my 11 yr son(TWIN) Tyler, has been > recently diagnosed with OCD. Guest guest
, I don't have as much time for reading these days, but I wanted to quick jump in here and say that when my DD (12) started Prozac at age 7, we saw an increase in anxiety for the first 6 weeks. Just when I thought we should take her off and try something else, the anxiety just basically melted away. It lessened over the next 6 weeks until she didn't have any OCD symptoms. Since then, she's had flare-ups and we've had to increase the dose, or add another med. temporarily, but she's doing great right now. Just thought I'd mention it because sometimes it's the right med, you just have to give it some time to work. (Usually up to 12 weeks at a therapeutic dose.) Guest guest
Thanks Dina. I am trying to be patient and not jump to conclusions. Just trying to take it one day at a time. angela:) Dina <dina.n.jones@...> wrote: , I don't have as much time for reading these days, but I wanted to quick jump in here and say that when my DD (12) started Prozac at age 7, we saw an increase in anxiety for the first 6 weeks. Guest guest
((())) The books that helped me the most (and we went to therapy too) were " Freeing Your Child from obsessive compulsive disorder " by Tamar Chansky, " Brain Lock " and " Helping Your Child with OCD " by Lee Fitzgibbons. I also got a book for kids called, " What to do when your brain gets stuck " that helped to explain to my child in simple terms what the problem with their brain was and she could help herself. Good luck to you and your family. It is hard but you can get through this if you work as a team and learn how to help him. Shaw <mailto:game-enthusiast@...> game-enthusiast@...
