Guest guest
Thanks for this, . While it stands to reason that HIV treatment is going to improve ones immune system and reduce any co-morbid condition like cancer, the fact remains that anal cancer rates in HIV+ men are many fold higher than in HIV- men. As the study authors suggest, the numbers in their study are small. Given the low incidence rates of anal cancer & AIN you need thousands, not hundreds of study subjects to provide a definitive answer. (I'm assuming the number of 25 in the last paragraph is a typo--earlier they said the study size was 250) The numbers speak for themselves: when people started taking HAART anal cancer rates didn't fall, they rose dramatically--because people were actually living long enough to develop cancer. So the take home message for HIVers here is: take your meds (for a many more important reasons than cancer prevention) and get an anal pap & HRA at least yearly.
