Guest guest
If someone were to take their child to Emory for a diagnosis they would get a complete exam with a very accurate diagnosis. Can anyone recommend the next best place to go? (Not the marcus institute - I am looking for a person who takes insurance but can give a very appropriate evaluation that is very accurate.) If I need to spend the $$$ for Emory I will, but if I can save it for treatments that would be better. Background - Son was " developmentally behind his peers according to the daycare/ preschool he attends. School tested him - needs spech for communication issues - also tested for " very likely to have autism. " Took him for a clinical evaluation with Amy Corbin at Emory who said he definately falls on the autism spectrum. She recommended taking him to a neurologist since he had a seizure and autistic kids have a 25% chance of developing a seizure disorder later in life. We saw Dr. Janice who diagnosed him with autism, not spending a lot of time. She also made note of his lining up her rolls of paper and his hyperactivity. She said it would still be good to take him to Emory because their evaluation is so much more comprehensive and they have more of a set up than she has to test and knowledge is power to get us a more accurate diagnosis. Now my husband has talked with his mother (a 30 year kindergarten school teacher) who has decided that there is nothing wrong with our child. He is smarter than the kids she gets in her kindergarten class who don't know letters and numbers as our son does. He is gifted, and possibly a little bit ADD, according to her. My husband has sided with her and forbid me to speak anything of our son being " autistic " becacuse we will not label him, as people will look at him " differently " and we don't want that for him. I am also to quit reading about autism, as it only makes me look for things to say he is autistic. Yes he is very high functioning. He has shown GREAT improvement on the GFCF diet. (My mother in law also said that I am going to make my child mentally retarded by not giving him food. She gave her kids hot dogs and fruit loops - ok I teach nutrition and wellness - GFCF or not my children will eat healthy.) GFCF is also used for ADD and ADHD kids. I do not hink he is ADD, very possibly ADHD. And AADHD is part of the autism spectrum. So what can we do? It would be a lot easier for me to take my child to a dr for $25 than $500 when my husband is not on board with this thing. I just want what is best for my child and want to know how to best help him and what services he needs. Does anyone have any ideas or recommendations?
