Guest guest
Wow- this is funny if not utterly frustrating. Do various providers ever realize how much they may be contradicting each other?! This just gets to me, because when you are being told as a parent what to do or not do, and how you may be wrong, and thus are expected to defer to an expert, otherwise the implication is that " you are part of the problem " , that expert does not know you heard quite different than what s/he is recommending or diagnosing from another previous provider. You don't really want to alienate them if your child is willing to work with them, or to be perceived as part of the problem if you come off as know-it-all yourself just by questioning them alot. In your mind you have to try to reconcile the expert here with the expert there, and be courteous rather than saying " well what do you know? Do you realize you are contradicting the expert at such and such renowned medical facility, or in such and such reknowned field- so I can't help but suspect that your guess is probably as good as, or maybe not as good as mine (!) " No bashing all providers but some seem more convinced of their expertize, such as in offering blanket recommendations which they seem so certain of (such as regards homeschooling for instance). I would think working in this field of neurpsychiatric disorders would humble anyone b/c there are rarely any clear cut answers. Listening carefully to parent observations with their aquired insight based on of life with that child, and working with the parent to work with the child, may help more than strict adhrence to the dsm. I also homeschool but most often have heard it was not a good choice, fine, but it does not have to be offered as so absloute and certain. In my family it is working for some, while switching to public school may be working for others, or indpendent study, or private school (we have dome all these). But then I have not looked for homeschool " friendly " providers who would likely be more into holistic approaches. nancy grace > > My 6year old has alwasy been defiant.
