Guest guest
Some of you who are also on other lists may see this more than once, sorry! Just wondering how to deal with some of the latest OCD " issues " . For example, DS has convinced himself that church is an inherently unsafe area, because after all, bad people are out to get good people, what better place to hit than where good people congregate! So we haven't stopped going to Mass, but he makes sure to bless himself with holy water beforehand and at least then he feels that he's protected. It's a ritual, but there are lots of rituals in Catholicism, so that one is ok (he only does it once). Unless he insists on blessing everyone else, or standing guard to make sure they do it themselves.... ;-) Latest thing is that he worries that he has tried to commit suicide. He says that he woke up after dreaming that he was strangling himself, to find that his neck was resting on his arm. I said that sometimes a physical state will affect a dream, so maybe the pressure on his neck caused the dream and then woke him up. He agreed, but then said that he'd pushed a little harder to " test " whether it could really have hurt him. I don't think it was a real threat -- is is quite adamant that he worries that he will die or we will die, so I think it's part of that. I am just never sure what to say in these situations. I try to be matter-of-fact, reassuring but not overly so. I explain a phenomenon, but not more than once. Does that seem like the right idea?
