Then there were the patients who INSISTED that no one but the doc

start their IV's, not the nurse. Served them right, I guess.

They don't ask for docs here....they ask for the Annesthesiologists here. We

had to try at least 2 sticks before we could call them. It used to tick me off

because they would say " you won't get it " and I'd be absolutely sure they

were wrong. made me twice as determined....LOL. Not to blow my own horn But I am

good. It's all in the technique....LOL.

I've got to say that I also absolutely hate butterflies... at least

Never done a 14...Lots of 16's but don't think I have ever even seen a

14....Used to piss me off that the idiots in the ER would put a 20 or a 22 in

somebody with a fractured hip. They knew damned good and well we would have to

pull

it for surgery because they had to have at least an 18 for surgery. Some Er

nurses aren't worth a crap then you have those who are great will use their

brain and while they're sticking someone getting the labs that they need or draw

extra blood just in case. Saves lot of wear and tear on the pt.

Was the singer anyone we might know?

I've got to say that I also absolutely hate butterflies... at least

for IVs... The ones we have are ONLY for drawing blood. Thinking of

needing an IV for blood, I recall the first time I started a 14g IV...

it happened to be at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital's ER... I was a

traveler there in 1999. It was on a 17 year old kid that had been in

a vehicle accident. The kid's father happened to also be a nurse and

had never seen an IV that was orange in color. He asked me if it was

a rare brand or something, since IV catheters now follow a universal

color scheme based on size. I told him it was a 14g IV... his jaw hit

the floor. I told him I couldn't find any thing bigger.

About doctors doing a skill that is often left for nurses, that

reminds me of situation I had once. I used to volunteer with Rock

Medicine, providing medical services to people at rock concerts. One

show, I was the first nurse there and the doctor was there. We got a

special request from the marquee singer's assistants that the singer

wished to have the doctor administer a vitamin B12 shot to him. This

singer is a very excentric person and requested that a doctor give him

the shot... and to wear sterile gloves. The doctor and I both laughed

at how he wanted it. The doctor told the assistant that he'd send me

in to give the shot, since I give tons of shots and it had been years

since he had given an IM injection. I don't know if this singer ever

knew I wasn't a doctor. I was instructed to not say anything to the

singer... just walk in, do the deed and walk out. I DID wear sterile

gloves, even though it was pointless to do so.
