As the proud owner of 6 pieces of body art and 1 cover up) I know

that finding the " right " artwork is not always easy! Also, finding

the right artist to put it on you is sometimes just as hard.....

I started with friends, got recommendations, looked at their work

(most tattoo shops and artists have photo albums of their work) and

then thought about what I wanted tattooed on my body...trying to

remember all the while that this is forever, and I wanted something

that had meaning (LOL, the only one I regret is having my ex bF's

initials on my butt! - and that is going to get covered with a tribal

sun!) I too want something where my belly button used to be, as well

as to cover the TT scar...I am thinking of several different ideas,

but none of which I feel feel right just yet, so I am waiting until

the right one comes along....

The right questions? I was concerned about sterilization of

equipments etc...but any GOOD tattoo shop is monitered by health

inspectiors and is usually very safe.... I also wanted to know about

aftercare, infection rates and prevention, color loss and whether

they would do free touch up's in case of color loss or bleeding ink.

I had 3 tattoos done in Visalia at Flying Dog tattoos, 3 in Tulare at

The Ink Machine, and one at Studio 13 Tattoo's in Salinas, by far,

the best work was Salinas....it cost me almost $200 bucks, but the

color, the clarity, the minimum of heavy black outlines, all made it

worthwhile!

I know that I want a claddagh tattoo on my lower back, but finding

just the right one for my belly button and tummy scar is taking some

time! I am thinking that having it soon while I still have so much

numbness along the scarline would be a PLUS!

If I were you, go online, search out tattoo shops in your area, and

see if they have a website, many do, and many show samples of their

artwork....ALSO, they will usually have great aftercare unstructions

as well as FAQ's..... but the best artists usually come recommended

by happy clients! If possible - find someone whose tattoos you admire

and ask them where they had it done!

I am planning to have my next one done here at Toxic Ink in Hanford

or at Lou's in Lemoore (both do beautiful work) also there is an

awesome lady tattoo artist in Tulare, Coleen, who does fantastic work!

Good luck on your search! Look online (search for tattoo flash art)

and if you find anything you like print it out, take it in, and show

them what you are after!

I have a website that you should look at, has pictures of how permanent

makeup artists can camouflage scars to look more like normal skin. This way

you don't necessarily have to have a tattoo that covers the whole scar. They

also show a tatoo covering a scar ona person's knee...

melisa, i had johnny at gypsy's (right there in lancaster) do my

first tat - i have a lion's head on my calf. i really liked him, and

the studio. it was very clean and comfortable. i had my next two

done here in ridgecrest, but my guy moved to san diego. so for my

next one i will be going to a different local artist. if you are

going to be at the support meeting in april i can show you what i

have.

i got my belly tattoo in at the end of october 2003 (i had my

tt/hernia repair done in april 2003). i waited the six months for

several reasons, the main one being that i wanted the swelling to be

gone and had been told it could last up to 6 months. i have since

heard that it could take a year, but mine was pretty much gone at 6

months. i had no pain with my tat, but that could be different with

everyone. i actually found the pattern that i liked on a belt buckle

that a friend had brought back from ireland. all my tats have a

religious significance to me. as i always tell my kids, don't get

your spouse/significant other's name tattooed - you don't know that

will be the only person you are ever with (divorce/splitting up or

death may change that for some). i always tell them get your kids'

or your mom's name (those will never change).

look around, ask around (if you see someone that has a cool tattoo

ask them about it - chances are huge that they will be more than

happy to tell you where they got it), look on the net for ideas.

enjoy...

He Melisa,

I had my eyeliner tattooed. I went to the artist on the

recommendation of a friend. First and most important, make sure

they use disposable needles. No matter what they tell you, it is

NOT safe, EVER, to tattoo multiple people with the same needle, no

matter what they use to clean it. Second, ask to see a portfolio of

their work. A good artist will have one. Third, make sure they are

a certified tattoo artist. Ask to see their license . Just because

someone is a nurse (they advertise frequently as tattoo artists)

doesn't make them certified. I'm very happy with my eyeliner but

need to have it redone since it's been about three years and it's

faded a bit. I think the tat fades more around delicate skin area

like the eyes because I was warned that it might fade in a couple of

years. Most tattoos last longer than that.
