A " good surgeon " is one that is technically very excellent... has a good record with few failures. They know their stuff. They have learned techiques that improve the quality of their work to be the finest around. When my dad had his CABG (Coronary Arterery Bypass Graft), his cardiothoracic surgeon was a " good surgeon " ... though I wouldn't place him in the " great " category. Why not? He sucked when it came to explaining what he did and why. He was very brief and intimidating to ask a question of. I'm sure he cared enough that he didn't want any of his work to be a failure, that is where the caring ended. To begin with, A " Great Surgeon " is a good surgeon, but is very approachable. He has a sense of humor (doesn't HAVE to wear a bow- tie, but it isn't a drawback either ) He is able to explain why and how the surgery works. He shows real concern for the patient and their family when something isn't going as well as it should. He is able to relieve much of the fear of the unknown concerning the surgery. He has formed a team that works together to insure that everything that needs to be dealt with... is. He has the respect of his colleagues and the hospital in which he works. He respects the nurses that take care of his patients, working together with them as a team. (<- I had to add that one, being a nurse.) These are amoung the things that makes a surgeon great. In my meetings that I've had with Dr. K and Dr. Z, I have the impression that both of them fit the above description fairly well... I haven't seen anything to the contrary. I have met with another surgeon who does the DS, but my impression was that he'd rather be somewhere else than to be talking to me. He obviously knew his stuff, but I got the feeling that it was a more " cookie- cutter " approach to patients for the surgeon. He makes his appearances, but leaves the care to other people. I don't sense the same thing with Drs K and Z... they seem to care about individuals. This is the biggest reason I decided to have my surgery in Delano. The more I hear and read, the more convinced that I've made the best decision. Dr. K will be doing my surgery on Wednesday.
Guest guest
I > have tried explaining why I think he is a great doc vs a plain old good doc. He LOVES surgery. He LOVES the challenge of a revision. He CARES about his patients. These things make him more " in the present " while he is Wielding that Scalpel. He has the RESPECT of The Nurses, Doctors and Staff that work with him....Why? Because he treats them with respect, and he gives excellent care to the patients. One of the RN's that works in the Surgical pavilion said to me... " If I woke up from a terrible accident and saw Dr. K standing over me...I wouldn't be worried any more. I would feel like I was getting the best care possible " This same RN said " he gives us his cell number so we can call him " directly " . He even allows us to call him while he is in surgery, because he respects our nursing enough to know we won't call unless necessary and he wants his patients taken care of " I was patient #80something. I listened to what other patients said about him...but I went digging for what Nurses and Doctors said about him. Patients opinion told me about his bedside manner. The Doctors and Nurses opinion told me if he was Skilled. Dr. an excellent long time general surgeon at Delano used to assist Dr. K in surgery alot (he assisted on my surgery) Well I figured that guy was in Surgery with Dr. K...he saw first hand his skill and technique. Did you know Dr. 's daughter and Son-in-law had surgery with Dr. K? Dr. trusted Dr. K with his beloved family. And she lives closer to the Northern Ca DS surgeons. There are several others who work there that have trusted him with themselves or their family. He treats his patients with respect. I'm three years out, he has always taken the time to answer any question I asked, always made me feel like my time in his office was important. lol...gotta go eat breakfast with my dear hubby...good thing to or this would turn into a 20 chapter book!
