I had my surgery in 2001 so things may have changed since then...having said that here is what happened with me. After the consultation they sent me a letter. In the letter it outlined the things I would need to do before surgery. This letter can contain different things for different folks depending on what Dr. K found during the consultation. For example I had to have a Mammogram done because I was 43 and had never had one...that isn't something they would require of a man! I needed: **Medical clearance by primary care (written Clearence) with a complete H & P. **Two view chest Xray **EKG **Mamogram **Blood work (with a long list of the labs required) **Phychological Evaluation When you get your letter you will take it to your primary care doctor and he can order the labs and such....What you Might want to do is call and make an appointment now if it will take you a couple weeks to get " in " to see the doctor. This is especially true for the Phychological Evalution it usually take a few weeks to get in. Also...if during the process you are not clear as to what to do...Call the office and ask...that is always your safest course of action. Guest guest
welcome to the group lisa take care amber Introduction from (nabi80) Hi everyone! My name is and I just joined this group. I'm 24 years old and my BMI is about 47 I think? I just moved to Orange County, CA from Austin, Texas 2 months ago. I saw Dr K on Thursday (3/18) for my first consultation. He thinks I'm a good candidate for the surgery and would love to do it laprascopically on me. He said it's because I'm 100% healthier than his average patient, plus I'm sure he'd like to get more experience in (for laprascopic that is) But that's ok, I'm going to go ahead with the laprascopic. Hopefully I'll get approved by my insurance! I wasn't real clear on what comes next though. I know I need to go to at least 2 support meetings but what else is there? Pysch exam? Blood tests? Other tests? Can someone fill me in? Thanks, ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Guest guest
Thanks for the welcome! Dr K did tell me about receiving a letter so I guess that was what he was talking about.. I don't have a PCP here in California yet, but I'm going to be calling around tomorrow morning. Do you know if the list of psychologists that I received in the package from Dr K's office are the only ones I can go to? All of them were very far away, which can be a problem since I have a small child. Thanks for taking the time to give me some info though, I appreciate it! > welcome to our little corner of the world! > > I had my surgery in 2001 so things may have changed since > then...having said that here is what happened with me. > > After the consultation they sent me a letter. Guest guest
you can go to any psychologist you want to. A word of warning though...some will charge mega bucks and some will put you through a 3 day extensive exam/interview and then perhaps suggest therapy...so shop around. The Psychologist visit shouldn't take more than 1-2 hours. So call a few and ask their procedure and cost. The psyc exam should be EASY. On finding a PCP...you want to ask if he/she is willing to be your pcp and support your decision to have The DS and if they will be willing to Work with Dr. K when or If necessary. So thank you to , Deb, Ann, Jo, a and whoever I may have missed. , the support group meetings sound so fun. I'd definately love to go... What time do you normally leave Orange County to go? I could possibly get my husband to take off work early to take care of our daughter while I go. That would be great Think I could hitch a ride with you? a, I went to bowie highschool for 2 weeks!! lol Before that I went to Hays and then I just did homeschool after bowie. I think I hated school so much because of being overweight But a lot of my family still live in south austin/buda. Pretty cool Anyways, thank you very much guys... you can check out my daughters website (has a few pics of me... Before my consultation with Dr. K., I was a Kaiser patient and they sent me to an RNY group in San Diego for a consultation. That included the required psychological workup. When I dumped Kaiser because they wouldn't even consider the DS as an option for me, I was able to get a copy of that psyc report faxed to Dr. K. by the psychologict, even though Kaiser tried to block her from releasing the info. (My patient rights trumped their medical group rights.) ;-) ANyway, Dr. K. and my new insurance carrier accepted that report and I was on my way. I'm a drama queen so I usually take an hour to tell my tale of woe (or until Jo or Sharon have managed throw 100 pounds of pickled tongue smuggled from Woolgrower's at me...remind me to tell you about Woolgrowers).
