This was compounded by the fact that we lived around the corner from the fire station and there were engines going by our apartment all of the time. The solution was to take the children to the fire station to meet the firemen. Then, every time an engine went past the house, we said, " There goes Mike O'Reilly! " This solved the problem. The kids enjoyed knowing who was on the engine and thought of him and not of the noise. P.S. 10 years later we went back to the same fire station because we needed street directions and Mike O'Reilly had been made chief. The kids were glad to see him again.
