Guest guest
Hello everybody, I was wondering if anybody could suggest HIV treatment that would reduce lipid elevations. I was on Kaletra several years back (guessing 2004 to 2009). I believe my cholesterol/triglycerides/etc. were normal until I got put on Kaletra, then in Aug 2007 I had a heart attack. It was then discovered my cholesterol/etc. was 250+. I was put on statins after my quad bypass, continued on Kaletra for another 2 years. I learned later on that Kaletra was notorious for causing heart attacks, and was removed from that therapy and put on Viread, Isentress and Inverase. I still have issues with lipid levels and cannot take statins. Several months ago I started having horrible body/muscle pain and stopped my statin for about 4 months and immediately feeling better, but my cholesterol was way up again, went on statins again with folic acid but again horrible muscle aches. Now I'm off once again. Longer story longer, any suggestions on HIV therapy? Will I need a geno/phenotype test? I go thru the VA for my treatment. Lastly, I put a layer of fat on my body I never had, and it doesn't feel good. It's kind of a saggy fat, I always had about 11% body fat, now it's about 24%. Any input/suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance. Rich
Guest guest
, Have you tried Niacin for your cholesterol? Some people complain of the flush, but if you titrate up gradually you should not have a problem. I take 2000mg daily-1000 am and pm and never have any problems. Guest guest
If you take statins, you MUST take Coq-10 to avoid the muscle problems you have experienced, which are well-known side-effect of statins because they deplete Coq-10 in your system. Do some research on Google on statins and Coq-10 an you will find the details. > > Hello everybody, I was wondering if anybody could suggest HIV treatment that would reduce lipid elevations. > > I was on Kaletra several years back (guessing 2004 to 2009). Guest guest
If your gentotype test results allow for it, have your doctor switch you to isentress instead of Kaletra. But be careful... If you have lots of pre existing nucleoside mutations, this switch may not work as well. Your lipids will go down. Also add exercise 4 times a week for an hour and minimize processed sugary carbs and friend foods. Guest guest
Hi, Rich. Sorry to hear about your troubles. If it helps, I take Reyataz, Norvir and Truvada plus 5 mg of Crestor daily for my cholesterol. I’ve not had any muscle aches or other side effects from this regimen. I did, however, have problems with Lipitor years ago along with the same ART. Before my family doctor raised my dosage of Crestor to 5 mg, I was cutting a pill in half every day and thus only taking 2.5 mg. Even that dosage was quite effective at managing my lipid levels. I hope that you find the answer.
