June 11, 2012 Truvada HIV PrEP Approval Decision Delayed Three Months The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has extended its review of Gilead Sciences’ approval application for Truvada (tenofovir plus emtricitabine) as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), according to a June 6 announcement by the company. Whereas an approval decision was originally expected by this Friday, June 15, the agency now has until September 14 to make its final determination. June 8, 2012 HIV Still a Chief Cause in Smaller Racial Life Expectancy Gap The gap in life expectancy between black and white American is not only shrinking, it’s now the lowest ever recorded in the United States, but HIV still plays a role in the disparities, according to a report in The Journal of the American Medical Association that looked at black-white differences in mortality. June 7, 2012 Untreated HIV Increases Stroke Risk, Particularly in Young People and Women People living with HIV, notably women, anyone younger than 50 and those with unchecked viral loads, are significantly more likely to experience a stroke compared with those not infected with the virus, according to a study published online ahead of print by the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes. June 6, 2012 Diabetes Further Increases Kidney Disease Risk Among People With HIV People living with both HIV and diabetes are much more likely to develop progressive chronic kidney disease (CKD) than people living with only one of the conditions, according to a study conducted by Veterans Healthcare Administration investigators and published ahead of print by the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes. Heard in the Blogs Staley Donna Summer's Letter to ACT UP When the news hit that Donna Summer had died, I was reminded of her little-known scrape with ACT UP, the AIDS activist group I joined shortly after its first demonstration in 1987. As many will recall, even though her music was hugely popular with the gay community, she faced an ongoing backlash after the Village Voice attributed some quotes to her from a concert in 1983, saying she slammed gays and claimed AIDS was a punishment from God. To everyone's surprise, Donna Summer wrote a letter to ACT UP New York attempting to mend the divide. A few quotes from the letter were reported at the time, and appeared often in recent online obituaries, but the letter itself has never been seen publicly. Heard in the Forums The problem lies in the fact that I don't know how to date I miss affection I miss having someone but I can't forgive myself that I lost the chance to be normal to be life my friends (who are all getting married and having families) while I'm stuck going on dates with chicks and then having to tell them my status and being looked at in disgust even though I'm a good guy.
