Guest guest
Hi , I'm sure you will find a lot of great support here. I have a 10 year old daughter who was diagnosed this past March when she was still 9. I never took her to a psychiatrist, but we do go to a child psychologist who specializes in CBT for OCD (specifically ERP, or exposure and response prevention). Just to give you some hope, we have seen GREAT improvement since we started therapy. She has a few mild symptoms remaining that we are still working on, but I doubt she would even be diagnosed with OCD at the point we are now. She also had obsessions dealing with God--she had periods of time when she felt she didn't believe in God, and then she was afraid she was going straight to hell, and that she was a bad person. She never counted, but she did do a lot of checking (faucets, doors, items that had been given to her, etc.). She also had some contamination/handwashing issues (this is the area that we're still working on, but it is better than it was). I remember how difficult it was when we were first starting out with treatment, and I just wanted to let you know that it will get better! Once you get her started with CBT (make sure it's someone that treats a lot of kids with OCD with ERP) I think you'll see improvement quickly! Feel free to e-mail me privately if you want to. I can give you a list of some good books to read about kids with OCD if you are interested (if you haven't gotten them already!). Take care, > > Hi everyone! > I am the mother of a 9 year old daughter who was recently (in May) > diagnosed with Moderate - Severe OCD. Guest guest
Hi , Welcome! I have two kids with diagnosed ocd, ages 10 and 5. I can really sympathize with you. You know, after you mentioned the things your daughter says she feels, it reminds me of the things my kids have said. My daughter actually still says things like, " I feel like someone is around me and it never goes away " My son, who has the bad thought type ocd used to say that he felt people going by him, and could actually feel the wind as they passed. It really scared me, but alot of that has passed for now. It sounds like your doing all you can.The meds should help! Hugs to you ! Guest guest
Welcome, . Glad you are here. It sounds like you are on the right track. When you talk to the therapist, make sure they do ERP (exposure and response prevention), that is especially important. They need to be exposed to the things OCD is demanding they do, so that they can fight it and become desensitized to it. We have noticed a big improvement with our son's rituals since we started exposure therapy. It can be hard to find someone who knows what they are doing with it, so hopefully the therapist you were referred to will know it. Learning how to fight OCD and boss it back, will give your daughter life long tools to use to keep control over her OCD. Our son deals with physical rituals and intrusive thoughts, which includes scrupulosity. He was diagnosed at 7 and is now 15. We've gone through good times and bad as it waxes and wanes. He had a HUGE relapse this year and it took us months to get it under control (still have some bad days here and there), but it's worth the fight, because he's come a long way from being on our sofa, white-faced, in the fetal position, not eating or sleeping, or even communicating for the most part. You'll find people who understand here who are very supportive. And people who've been through what you are going through who have great advice. Again, welcome. Guest guest
BJ, Thanks for your encouragement! I so hope she have success with it! I am looking forward to getting her in to see the therapist. Hoping it won't take too long to see results. Meds have helped a good bit, but she's still having breakdowns occasionally to the point of crying. Can't wait 'til she can " boss back OCD " . Guest guest
, Thanks for your encouragement! Every now and then, I sort of find myself laughing at her - not in a mean spirited way, but sometimes it's either laugh or cry! The other day, I walked by her bathroom, and she was scrubbed with soap bubbles to up above her elbows. I asked her what she was doing, she said she had seen a spider, and was afraid it was on her. I don't know why I laughed at her, but at the time, it just seemed funny (again, either laugh or cry! ) Looking forward to the relief that CBT will (hopefully!!!) bring! Not sure what to do about school starting - do I tell her teacher or not? Don't want her teacher to be biased against Makayla, but I also don't want her to get into trouble if she has a bad day. (But is pretty good at controling it at school, but has serious melt downs when she gets home. It's tears from the time she gets home until she goes to bed). Psychiatrist said to not tell the teacher. If OCD becomes an issue at school, then schedule a conference. What do you do about school? I homeschooled her for her 1st grade year (not because of any problems, just wanted to spend more time with her!) (she's now going into 4th grade). I loved it. Considered doing it again, but Not sure what's best for her. Thanks for your help and listening ear! Blessings to you and your family. Sincerely, in GA > > > > Hi everyone! > > I am the mother of a 9 year old daughter who was recently (in May) > > diagnosed with Moderate - Severe OCD.
