Guest guest
Hi I have decided to give up work as if i carried on i think i was going to burn out fast, being a single mum with a child that rarely sleeps and trying to do all the therapies has finally taken its toll, i was concerned that if i gave up my job i wouldn't be able to continue to pay for Harry's therapies but not having the best paid job in the world and all the stress it has had on me just getting to work some days i just felt that this was the only way forward for my own sanity. I was shocked to learn that i am only going to be £14 worse off a week by giving my job up (this doesn't obviously include the unpaid days at work i have had to take when my son has had me up all night). I will also be saving money by not using my car to commute to work and not having to do my shopping online and i can now decorate my house when Harry is back at school, something that needs to be done, i can go and get my haircut, go to the dentist, go shopping, have a coffee with a friend etc without having to pay someone to look after my son (7 hours DP a month is all i was given, which is a tip of the iceburg of the amount of help i need and my wage was only £7.70 and hour, i pay my childminder/ABA tutor £9 an hour) and last winter when the freezing weather took hold, i was not entitlted to the cold weather supplement because i worked, now i will be, oh and also entitled to free school meals for Harry if i wanted them, so all this time i have been struggling and getting stressed, really looking forward to the future, i suggest anyone in a similar situation fill out the benefit calculator below, find out how much you are entitled to, the funny thing is, if SS had given me more DP then i wouldn't have ever looked into this, so in a round about way they have done me a favour, never thought id say that about SS, lol x xx https://www.dwpe-services.direct.gov.uk/portal/page/portal/ba/lp
Guest guest
, I hope you will be claiming Carer's Allowance, and does your son get the higher rate of care DLA, as he has significant night needs? If you will be on Income Support, what happens is that they reduce your income support by the carer's allowance amount but then they give a proportion of it back by income support (mad!). If your son has the higher rate of care DLA they also give you some more Income Support becauser you have a severely disabled child. Carer's Allowance is taxable, but it will be the only taxable income you will have probably and you shouldn't have to pay tax on it because of your personal tax allowance. Jolly complicated! Guest guest
Hi Hope TST went well for you. Its hard giving up the " known " to go into the " unknown " but I found that when I gave up work all of the family were much less stressed. had real quality time with me, and I didn't lug ten tons of guilt around with me. Another thing is it might not be forever, it depends how things work out I guess. How old is your Son? I ask because of the Becta Home Access Package. Have you applied for it? Don't forget Council Tax rebate and Enhanced Tax Credits. Take care Eileen
