Who Should Care for the Aging HIV Patient?

As the evidence continues to mount that HIV-infected patients more quickly develop complications traditionally associated with aging, HIV physicians like Sax, M.D., are revisiting the question: What type of clinician is best equipped to handle issues relating to people with HIV as they get older? Is it the HIV specialist, or a primary care physician?

New York City Recommends HAART for All Diagnosed Citizens

Going a step further than current U.S. Department of Health and Human Services antiretroviral therapy guidelines, New York City Health Commissioner Farley has recommended that New York City physicians initiate antiretroviral therapy for their HIV-infected patients as soon as those patients are diagnosed. Farley's proposal is similar to one adopted by San Francisco in 2010.

Testosterone Replacement Therapy and Polycythemia in HIV-Infected Patients

" A research letter recently published in the journal AIDS by Vorkas et al determined that testosterone use was associated with polycythemia, and intramuscular administration demonstrated a stronger association than topical (testosterone patch) use, " Vergel, B.S.Ch.E., reports -- a finding that warrants routine hematologic monitoring for HIV-infected patients receiving testosterone therapy.

Ritonavir (Norvir) Labeling Revised to Include New Warnings on Adverse Effects, Drug Interactions

On December 7, 2011, the Food and Drug Administration approved a number of safety-related revisions to the ritonavir (Norvir) product labeling. The changes include new warnings regarding the risk for toxic epidermal necrolysis and s- syndrome, as well as warnings about possible interactions with anticancer agents dasatinib, fentanyl and nilotinib.

Annual HIV/AIDS Pandemic Update: Nearly Half of All Who Need Treatment Now Have It

" 2011 was a game changing year for the AIDS response, " UNAIDS reports in its annual update on the state of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. While aspects of the pandemic have worsened in some regions, the report states that overall, HIV incidence is down and AIDS-related mortality is on the decline as access to antiretroviral therapy continues to improve.

Global Fund Halts New Grants for Two Years, Citing Economic Downturn

Tempering the progress made against the pandemic this year, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria announced that it will offer no new grants for the next two years due to the global economic downturn and the European financial crisis. The fund will continue supporting about 400 HIV treatment and prevention programs working in more than 100 countries for now, but it will not subsidize new patients or service increases.

From the White House: The Beginning of the End of AIDS

President Barack Obama and his administration were busy on the HIV/AIDS front last week, unveiling some new initiatives and pumping some urgently needed funding into the U.S.'s cash-starved AIDS Drug Assistance Programs. Read this rundown from the White House on last week's announcements, including remarks from the President and other officials.

" Let Them Die " ? The Dangers of Losing Compassion

" It seems now that large (and growing) segments of our society have come to view basic compassion, the emotional capacity to experience another's pain, as a character defect, yet it is an essential element of what makes us human, " Fawcett, Ph.D., L.C.S.W., writes. In this blog entry, he talks about intolerance, stigma and its ramifications for people with HIV.

Under the Radar: Mental Health and HIV Risk

Fawcett, Ph.D., L.C.S.W., laments how little attention we pay to the mental aspects of HIV risk. " We need to be certain our outreach and prevention efforts incorporate the effects of mood disorders and behavioral concerns on sexual behaviors, " he urges. " To truly get to zero, we need to broaden our reach to all of the varied settings where vulnerability for HIV is born. "

A Bad Note in HIV Prevention -- Our VOICE May Be Hoarse, but the Opera Isn't Over

" Another disappointing note was bellowed out this month concerning the discontinuation of part of a significant HIV prevention trial in women, " writes nurse practitioner Bethsheba in this " HIV Care Today " blog post on TheBodyPRO.com. " The 1 percent tenofovir (Viread) gel arm of the VOICE phase 2B clinical trial was halted early. "

Lacy Campos: " You Can't Run From Yourself "

" I have never blamed anyone else for my HIV status, but nor had I really looked at myself and said: 'Hey kid, you did this to yourself, " Lacy Campos writes. " [HIV] was confirmation of everything that I believe(d) about myself. I was unlovable. I was untouchable. I was unworthy of love. And having HIV was very simply the confirmation of all the things that I knew to be true about myself. "

Word on the Street: Advice on Adhering to HIV Treatment

Staying on top of your treatment every day is not an easy task: Side effects, disorganization and the hustle-bustle of life can all stand in your way. We asked a range of experts and people living with HIV to talk about why adherence is important and offer strategies to help you make sure you remember to take your meds.

Loreen Willenberg: Radio Hope (Audio)

HIV controller Loreen Willenberg recently took to the airwaves to share her story and talk with psychologist Gluss, Ph.D., about long-term nonprogressors like her, who keep HIV at bay without the use of HIV meds. " I am deeply grateful for Dr. Gluss' compassion and concern, " Loreen explains, " when I lived with the very real fear of illness, and perhaps death, and how I coped with those feelings long before I learned about my unique ability to control the virus. "

Fogcityjohn: Dis Honesty

It's another first date for fogcityjohn -- and another occasion for him to wonder why he's so quick to disclose his HIV status so early. " As soon as the words were out of my mouth ... I could see it was a deal breaker, " he writes. " 's discomfort was written all over his face, and I wasn't in the least fooled by the exaggerated smile he used to try to cover it up. "
