You can no more CURE autism than you can CURE red hair or blue eyes or size 11 feet. To insist on a cure for autism is like insisting that because someone has size 11 feet that don't fit into size 8 shoes, they must either cram their feet into those shoes (a crippling thought) or cut their toes off in order to fit into those shoes (another crippling thought). To add insult to injury, the person with the crippled feet would then be forced to walk 'normally' even though there is nothing normal about having size 11 feet encased by size 8 shoes. The size 8 shoe people would all claim they had cured the size 11 feet people but that would be the farthest thing from the truth. Those size 11 feet people would still be size 11 feet people. The only way to be rid of size 11 feet people would be to ... eradicate them. This is what a CURE for a neurological difference means. Guest guest
This group is misguided and missing the point. As Raven has stated Autism is Autism. What would be infinitely more useful would be to spend these gobs of money teaching children. And not how to be NT but what it means when other people are. Age approite of course. Like learning another language or cultute. Survival skills, how to deal with NT's that say they are compassionate. I am sure we could compile a list. even courses on honing your perseveration. like Harry Potters wizard school. wizards and muggles. (I always go for the fantasy) I know. The point is none of these groups are pragmatic and none of the money gets to the families. It is a wordy form of snake oil that employs a whole bunch of people that divert money from actual children. How about a program to train parents to be various specialists (they like us in the dark because that controls us) I don't personally have anything to do with any of the named groups. i went to something at my local ARC (sensory GYM) It was 20 ASD children in a gymnastics gym with no direction one OT and a bunch of parents. No skill building, no order and it was 2 hours long. Well I am the one who didn't make it through sensory gym, (as my senses were toast) All the places that might actually work are so expensive that they are only self pay any no organization defreays their cost. Like Aspergers social groups for children. In the group children interact as we do online. They talk about being different and how to engage with the NT's(pragmatic) We can't go but I keep getting promised Um it is 60-90$ an hour. So far Ravi is a bit young to make the cost reasonable. I would like to stop getting so much help that isn't helpful. All the funds that I used to have access to do what would benefit Ravi directly have been diverted into these blanket programs. Children are kidnapped by the system so that they can be used as the next statistic. It is like seeing aliens misinformation, lies, subterfuge. I think the only way to have a chance is for funds to go directly to Families (or even directly from request by family to chosen provider) No misappropriation of funds no wishy washy programs, no national campaigns. No more well intentioned ninny trying to turn children NT. All I have ever wanted was functionality. I want our children to have the skills to survive, and the oppertunity for a measure of happiness. I don't want any doors shut in his face. Choice, all people should have the ability to choose and be given data to explain what can be chosen. Autism SpeaKS and the like are caves of secrecery. no one can ever be helped, only money generated that makes other people feel better about being bullies. Oh that poor child. Because if they helped the children and gave them the tools they where would all the sufferers of Autism go?? How could NT's feel helpful and compassionate I didn't post because it is suce a near pain. Denial of true help in order to keep our children from succeeding and life. As you know Ravi rides a crest (we walk an edge in his ability to function) One misstep and Ravi's gap may widen. I have to decide what to place my effort in (for his sake) what to spend money on or sign up for. I have to keep him healthy becasue as long as he is healthy he can participate at school I can sign up and request programs. i have to always push foward-- so that I can make a case and keep Ravi fresh in the teachers minds. If I don't point out progress they start to rely on his DX for his ability level. Recently someone suggested estate planning should he end up in a group home GROUP HOME he is 6. That decision wouldn't even come until 14. At 6 people are thinking Autism means group home (nice huh??) That is what makes the cure idea pop into people heads The idea of years of work and dedication sound too tough. (compassion) remember all the compassion. People like things that are weak and lowly. It is like telling a group of people that you have been a victim of rape. (no one speaks) the room is hushed, people actually leave, no one will talk about it. Reality is reality (I have had the same reaction when i say my son is autistic) It is depressing because the gap is so wide. i think we have to show our own compassion, we have to some way in a non-agressive way bring the truth out. Brain structure, and potential. I know Tom and Raven do all they can. I keep thinking someone has to be like Jesus mixed with Mother and Gandi. Commanding, gentle, pragmatic, driven, a gentle debator that leaves the opponant believing they changed their mind on their own. We cry out, but we must be explained by a moses(without having to drive out to the desert for 40 years) I wish no plagues nor to be stopped by any pharohs. it is like having to bow down to graven images now that i think about it, and wasn't Jesus angry with his own kinds ways. wow all sounds biblical to me. So if anyone has Moses/Jesus number in their cell?? mimi

" Luther King, Jr. Letter from Birmingham Jail April 1963 I have such a hard time with this. this is often part of my hiding I have to really think hard about what is real, not be swayed and look for the truth. There is a lot of Why aren't you fundraising, working (at a job) constantly volunteering for all the class things, organizing some event, participating in a Gala, writing a sappy poem about how you love potty training (ravi is by the way but he was 4 1/2) It is hard to participate because no one (Raven and Tom aside) is actually doing anything. There are some mom's I trust but don't get too chumy with, I attend a few key conferences throughout the year. i read A LOT. I am careful with my funds as I have often been promised monies (By agencies that are actually based on Dx supposed to be offering a stipened) I spend money on school materials and coordinate programming. the school has yet to tell me anything new about my son. i usually tell them. i point out the disconnects(they don't even seee them) I formulate the questions. Often I am told things like " oh that is what he has been saying " , " yes that is something we should be working on " , no I hadn't read that etc etc. every year, sooo frustrating all while being asked to do more But to what end??? there are no goals, no plans, no marks to strive for. they can't even keep it strait. Confrontational one moment, thanking me the next, sometimes quoting me to other parents as if they had come up with it. The politics of Autism/Aspergers are a minefield where good intentions and charity fight with logic. An ancient money feasting regime trying to look like they are doing something but all a mirror show with lives in the balance. As it is I feel robbed of my own education (as a child)gifted programs are sometimes a necessary element to sanity. it is a systemwide issue with all children losing while money changes hands and our youth is bought and sold like so much credit card debt. It is NOT just an issue of ASD, but an issue of ineffective schooling for all. if they put up special needs children no one will see the real darker ever insidious problem. Hey ny still can't read!!! actually he may be able to read but does he have the necessary skills for this era. Special needs is the breast cancer of yesterday, complain, make money and no one sees it!!!! lobbying, chest-beating, cog turning, machine fowarding stuff happens and no one is any better off. (they are during the highs but as Tom has said or william or Nick, or Raven or Beth or or Kim; when the music stops and a scape-goat is needed ASD is there pretty as you please. No problem seeming able bodied, upright, shy, anxious, prone to depression, EASY to PICK on. We are perfect!! Perfect to hurt. we have no feelings (except we all do). We all want love a measure of acceptance, to fit. We are the perverbial Jews of the Holocost, the Merchant of Venice. If you cut us do we not bleed. we do but we do it in silence, not willing to embarras ouselves, strong for our children, forced to be statues, to protect ourselves and our loved ones, we get over, get by and muddle through. Opressed and picked on by our fellows. we are supposed to be thank-ful. actually we are also like Women at the turn of the century hendrick Ibsen's (Yellow Wallpaper). We are supposed to be happy to have others choose for us, thank-your opressors know they are doing it for your own good Maybe I should have kept silent. It hurts so much Hiding is easier. Besides my ex came to see Ravi tonight I am always a bit fragile on those nights. mimi

I think plenty of people are outraged about it, and have spoken about it elsewhere. There are 20-30 Autism and Aperger groups on alone, and there has been plenty of outspoken outrage. Even some activism. And it's still there. And they get more government funding, and we get ignored. What's the difference between ignorance and apathy? Guest guest
wrote: "Well excuse the hell out of me, I don't reply [to the AUTISM SPEAKS posts] so I'm apathetic?" Here's a little something to read to help you determine if you are apathetic in your lack of reaction to the forces that would eradicate Autistics from this world. "A time comes when silence is betrayal. The truth of these words is beyond doubt but the mission to which they call us is a most difficult one. Even when pressed by the demands of inner truth, men do not easily assume the task of opposing their government's policy, especially in time of war. Nor does the human spirit move without great difficulty against all the apathy of conformist thought within one's own bosom and in the surrounding world. Moreover when the issues at hand seem as perplexed as they often do in the case of this dreadful conflict we are always on the verge of being mesmerized by uncertainty; but we must move on. " - Rev. Luther King (4 April 1967) at a meeting of Clergy and Laity Concerned at Riverside Church in New York City It seems so very apropos when speaking of the "war" that organizations like AUTISM SPEAKS wages on Autistics and the manner in which Autistics seem to react to such attacks. If you are still asking if you are apathetic regarding this situation, perhaps this additional quote will help you decide for yourself if you should be moved to action: First they came for the Communists, and I didn't speak up, because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up, because I wasn't a Jew.Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up, because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up for me. by Rev. Niemoller, 1945 wrote: "Well excuse the hell out of me, I don't reply [to the AUTISM SPEAKS posts] so I'm apathetic?" Maybe it has more to do with the lack of action against what is revealed in the posts than it has to do with actually answering the posts. Then again, if one does not stand up for one's freedoms, one does not have the right to argue that their rights were unlawfully stolen from him. Apathy granted permission to have those rights stolen. Guest guest
Aspies in relationships get into trouble for seeing no logical need to keep saying " I love you " repeatedly. Equally, in a caring community it's easier to take it as given that all news shared about attacks on our collective character is cared about. Do we all have to make a post saying so? What happens when you care but you simply agree with all that has been posted + have nothing new to say? It's really difficult to think of a snappy way to say that, and it can feel rude to post a one-word acknowledgement. Don't take it as uncaring if we have no new clever thoughts to add to the topic. > > I know how busy you are Raven, I do follow the work you and Tom do so well. I am just suprized at the apathy of the rest of the group. The society that I know and love people would be outraged, I am suprized by the lack of responce, I thought this group of people really cared
Guest guest
We could brainstorm Ideas on how to help our situation. Ways of getting support away from Autism Speaks. I thought a boycott of items they support might work, but I don't know how to start one of those, I thought one of our members might have an idea. Something obviously has to be done, but when things like this are ignored I think people don't care, and thats why they are ignoring it, and I can't stand apathy. I see too much of that at my sons school and too many other places. This group has never been apathetic before which is why it suprized me so much. Personally I find your post reasuring, thank you for adding your voice Maurice Bethmaurice <megaknee@...> wrote: Aspies in relationships get into trouble for seeing no logical need to keep saying "I love you" repeatedly. Guest guest
that kind of thinking is what destroyed Germany, that kind of thinking has created enemies of the natives of the north America. Well other people can care, I don't have the time for that. If you read what these people stand for its mass genocide of the Autistic people. Maybe its time we are made aware before we are rounded up and shipped off somewhere to be killed, its happened before, in our history and they say history repeats it self. So Yes I will yell and scream and carry on when I see my family or my friends being hurt. This forum is full of my friends, I believe its my obligation to at least try to inform them if I see something wrong and follow it up if there are no responces. There are ways of stopping people like this I believe world war II could have been stopped if people cared, and were less apathetic. There are 20-30 Autism and Aperger groups on alone, and there has been plenty of outspoken outrage. Even some activism. And it's still there. And they get more government funding, and we get ignored. What's the difference between ignorance and apathy? Guest guest
, did I single you out, did I say didn't reply he is apathetic, I don't believe we have talked before so you aren't one of the people I know. I have been a member of this group for a long time. This group isn't normally apathetic, we have a large group that does respond, quite frequently. Im looking for help compating this group, Where to I go for help to my friends the other aspies in my group. I was hoping one of our members would see the posts and help come up with ideas to combat this group, to join Raven and Tom's cause, instead I got ignored, so I thought I would stir the pot a little, and see if anyone was paying attention. Sometimes people need a shove to get them goinging rather than a little push.
