Oh dear... as one who has experienced broken and jammed toes and such yours sounds like it could be in danger of being injured.  Alas I don't think there's much anyone can do with a wonky toe other than ice and low impact but I'm curious to know what the podiatrist says!  I'd be freaked out too, broken toes are NO FUN.

Thanks ! I hope it isn't broken! It is super weird that it only does the popping in the morning as far as I can tell. I'll keep monitoring it this weekend and probably call the doc on Monday. It has been going on for months off and on so I don't know at all what's going on. I'll let you know when I know though.

Hi ,

That does sound a bit weird. I wonder if something is dislocated? Let us know what the podiatrist says. I hope you had a good night and it didn't bother you!Donna

I have a weird update on my toe issue.Last night I propped a pillow between my knees as I slept and the toe did not wake me up but I don't know if it is related or not yet because it doesn't wake me up every night. Today I'm much more aware of it and realized I've noticed in the mornings that it is still often sore and kinda noticed a weird sensation if I wiggled or flexed my toes but ignored it. Today I paid more attention and I noticed the joint kind of popped as I flexed my toes so I put my hand on it while I flexed and sure enough, something was moving! Later in the day, though, this has not happened. Call me freaked out (or freaky) but once again, if you know anything about this, please let me know. I think I'll probably call my podiatrist next week though...

Where was it moving when it popped?  If it was in the joint, I wouldn't worry about it because there is a lot of play in those joints.  You can even move them sideways if you do it gently so you don't dislocate it and will feel movement in the joints. As physiologists, we're taught to determine broken bones and muscle and ligament issues by moving the joints in all directions and feeling the individual bones.  But once we determine what it is, we are only able to treat certain things and then we refer for others. The popping in the joints is usually just synovial fluid and not a big deal.  Now, if it is not in the joint, then you have a broken toe.  Most doctors can't do anything for a broken toe.  They tape it to the one next to it for a few weeks.  A podiatrist might be able to do more, but I'm not sure.  Definitely let us know what he says.

Hi Donna,

It didn't bother me again last night and didn't pop or move around hardly at all (a little but not as much) this morning. We just got back from DS's rollerskating party though and I could feel it hurting while skating. Not terribly, just a light, persistent ache which is what it is during the day sometimes. Very weird. It does seem to be getting a little worse overall since now I'm noticing it during the day. That isn't stopping me from doing things like skating and FIRM workouts because it just isn't bad except sometimes at night but I'll get it checked out just to be sure. I'll let you know what I find out.

Hi Tonya,

I think it is just in the joint (and your info is very informative and reassuring, thank you). The toe looks absolutely normal otherwise, no swelling or discoloration and, like I say, this has been going on for months. If it didn't wake me up at night I would just say think it is weird and move on. I think I'll have a podiatrist look at it, just 'cause it seems to be getting worse (feeling lightly achy during the day, not terribly painful at all, just a dull "I'm here!" kind of ache). Thanks tons for all your help & information! I'll send an update after I see the doc.
