This morning I put the corn cob on the feeder for the squirrels and got the paper. Going back inside, I got the peanuts and threw some of them out the door as per usual. While doing that, I noticed the little water dish for the critters was empty. It is on the lowest step and right next to the railing. So, I went out and leaned over to pick it up, my right side touching the railing. Looking up, I saw a squirrel coming up the walk to get the peanuts I had just thrown out. There are one or two squirrels that will let me get really close to them, so I stayed still to see what it would do.

Right about then, there was a loud fluttering noise and something with pointy feet landed on my shoulder. Turning my head a little, there was a Blue Jay standing just about on my left shoulder blade. It saw me move and took off for the trees screeching all the way. They know that I throw out food in the mornings, so they wait for it. Very often they land on the railing. I guess it just overshot or thought there was something new to land on.

At any rate, it didn't stay gone long. I could tell that because there about 5 of them around: 4 males and 1 female, probably all one family, and all 5 of them were out there within minutes of my going back inside.

Luckily for me, the bird didn't leave claw marks or anything else.
