Right on, Darcy! You did a pretty darned good pace in a headwind, and also considering that this bike is new to you. Doesn't it feel being free when you're out there? I love it so much.

I was actually planning on doing Tonique Mat.  But, I was sitting at the computer with the windows open, and it was very peaceful out.  Super warm already and a light breeze.  The idea of going into a basement for my workout was sooo unappealing!  So I snuck out of the house before a sole was awake.  It was a wonderful ride.  I will have to say, I bit off a pretty big chunk though.  I was pretty tired when I got home.  I had the wind against me totally on the way home.  Even going downhill, I had to pedal a bit at times! :)  Anyway, it took me 50 minutes and I burned 523 calories with my average at 133.

Anyway, I would really like to sneak in a section of Tonique Mat later, but I'm not going to lose sleep over it if I don't.  Especially as I was using today as my rest day.Enjoy your Sundays!Darcy

Thanks !  Yes, it really felt great.  But, I was a tad concerned since I didn't have my cell phone.  It's kind of " scary " to me to be so far away from home on just my bike.  I keep thinking what if something breaks?!  LOL.. Next time I will find a way to pack my cell phone, and I won't be thinking of that :)  Here are my stats for the ride :)  They probably mean more to you than me ... but I'm learning!  I do a better job pedaling in higher gears, w/ a slower cadence.  I should try to work on that!

Total time:  46:25Trip distance: 10.28Average speed 13.3 mphAverage cadence 68Max speed:  27.18 mph (fun!)  LOL..Darcy, who loves my little sigma speedometer :)

More than stats, it's just nice to be OUTSIDE!  I love running outside but can't stand the treadmill.  Same with biking.  In a gym on a bike going to nowhere, can't do it.  Bikes are so great because they take you places!  I attached a milk basket with bungee cords onto my back rack (I had to buy that extra) so I can put my stuff in it.

A cell phone is handy, that's for sure. That's a great average speed for a headwind. You rode pretty fast for such a low cadence. You've got wicked strong legs. Isn't that max speed a thrill?

You'll probably find that it's less fatiguing to ride at higher cadence. When you drop into an easier gear and pedal faster, it'll drop your speeds at first. However, if you continue to train at higher cadence, you'll find that you can tap into a vast well of energy. You will start to think that anything less than 20 miles is just a warm up. Your neuromuscular system adapts and you get faster if you ride this way often enough.

On a related note about being prepared:I rode today too, and I learned a lesson: carry two spare inner tubes, not just one. I headed out  for my long Sunday ride, and I was on lovely 2 lane rural road, winding my way up a hill. My rear tire flatted out. I had a spare tube and a CO2 inflator, so I fixed the tire. I pulled 5 really wicked thorns out of the tire before I replaced the tube. They almost seemed like metal, they were so sharp and tiny.

Then I checked the front tire, and it had thorns too, but it was somehow still inflated. Lucky, lucky, lucky. I was blissfully riding alone, and didn't want to call anyone for a rescue, so I realized it was time to turn back in the hope that my front tire would stay full until I got home. If I had carried an extra tube, I would have felt secure in finishing the 50 miles I had planned for today. I rode 13. (Then I came home and did STS Disk 1 plus a dance video as a pretty decent consolation).

Practice changing inner tubes if you haven't done that before. It's not difficult, and it makes you feel more secure and capable.

Darcy, I bet you really enjoyed your ride A LOT! I remember how free I used to feel when I rode my bike, almost like I was flying. In high school a friend of mine and I rode from Farmington Hills (9 mile road) to her Dad's house, some where in Plymouth. I don't know how far it was but we were worn out when we got there. Luckily for us, he gave us a ride home. We rode our bikes on the path along the highway.....probably not as safe today as it was then.\ Do you and your family ride bikes a lot during the summer? Thanks Jen.  Yeah, we are getting into it.   But we do a lot of fun stuff during the summer, so it's not just bikes.  DH has been super-busy working on this chicken coop so we haven't had much time for family bike rides.
