Guest guest
I'd rather be on my meds than go through what he's overcome! It's great to know that eradication is possible........but sure hope they find a way that costs less than a million dollars, and doesn't have a high likelihood of killing me in the process. Guest guest
Last week I was having a conversation with someone and "did the math" about my HIV meds. I've been on meds for 25 years, and my meds currently cost (no lie) $40,000 a year. Do the math: 25 years x $40,000/yr = (cue the Austin Powers/Dr. Evil music) = $1,000,000. Yes, that's a million. And I've never been sick due to HIV, either. Now, I have no idea how much my meds cost 25 years ago; but it could even have been more. This boggles the mind. This treatment could be $100,000 and it would only be 2.5 years of meds for me, at today's costs. Kinda looks cheap, don't it?JimS.>> I totally agree JB > > He's for sure a very lucky man (and not bad looking > > I wonder if they ever find a cure... How much will the prossible price be? Guest guest
He had two (not one) bone marrow transplants followed by chemo. Approximate cost of each around 350,00 dollars. High degree of complications and mortality. And after he got out of the hospital, he was mugged and almost killed. A true survivor! Guest guest
Oh phew! I am glad I am not the only one feeling the same way. That's great for him, but the man was suffering from cancer....and the treatment he received is basically a last ditch effort to erradicate the cancer. He is very lucky to have survived that. I know someone's daughter who did not. What that treatment does to your body is unbelieveable and for me, I would rather take my couple of pills a day. Someday if they can find a treatment to mimic this without basically taking you to the brink of death that will be a good thing. But I kind of find it annoying to see the constant headlines of the Man Cured Of HIV. Like this was some magical formuala to cure him. He looks like he is doing great and hopefully neither the HIV or cancer return... Guest guest
Throw in the 30% mortality of BMT and the impossibility of finding delta 32 deletion compatible donors for most patients and the futility of this approach for general treatment becomes even more clear. Plus, reinfection becomes a real issue. The important thing about this case is that it shows that eradication is possible. As a practical treatment modality it's a non starter. Beamed in from the asteroid belt for your pleasure.
