Guest guest
I was getting ready to say I haven't had that experience. I knew my son was "off" when he was VERY little. He was dx'd at 5 w/ AS. We've had issues from the get-go, but either way we are here to support ea. other....I'm sure there are some later dx'd AS kids here. Mine was just not one of them. Doesn't mean they don't have something in common. Hang in there!! Guest guest
Hi, welcome to the pokemon club. My son at 15 still loves it. The psychologist says its because of something about it with numbers. I have tried for years to get my son to give it up because all of his peers have gotten so over it years ago, they make fun of him because he still likes it. Now we are on to Yugi=Oh. Guest guest
Hi cheryl My son is 16 and even though he has not had his official diagnosis, we feel he is defiantly Aspergers. He will talk over and over about the same topic and also fixate on things as well. He also does not like to socialize much especially with people he does not know or does not know well. I have to say the best advice I was given from his Therapist was to get him to socialize with a friend his age at least a few times a month. He has one good friend his age and since we dont' live that close he only sees him once per month. However, it helps him get out and "hang" with him for at least 4 hours without us! He will go to his friends house and his friend gets him to meet his friends and gets Austin to go to movies, etc. I would like them to do this more often but every little bit counts. I am looking for support too, so feel free to message me anytime! Guest guest
Hi everyone:Thanks for your comments. I really appreciate it so much. He was misdiagnosed as a child with ADHD ( I would say he still has it), his OCD/General Anxiety has gotten worse, but we are working on it. With some topics he is truly gifted. He will test out of the ball park. In the areas he is not interested in, he truly struggles and will come to tears. We currently homeschool since I work out of the home. I appreciate your input. Let me know if you have any tips or suggestions. Thanks, Cheryl Have a great day! Guest guest
My son (16yo) usually plays Halo, Fable or Final Fantasy, but games still get used regularly - one of his favourite presents at Christmas was a soft toy koopa (sp??) from his sister. He never got into Pokemon. His obsession is with computers and games rather than anything in particular. A couple of months ago he found his old the Tank Engine game (his first game when he was 3 yrs old) and set up his computer so he could run it. Guest guest
Ben's response is more to just refuse to do the work. He failed 2 subjects and almost a third last year (year 10) because he refused to do the written work. Maths is his best subject - anything less than an A+ indicates he has been lazy. I don't know that he has ever found any subject too hard at school, more that he finds it boring, or the class is disorganised. Sometimes an assignment is too much for him - often ones that begin with "how do you feel about ....". At home, he definitely responds by giving up if something seems too hard. After many discussions, he is trying harder. He even plays games without needing his computer open to a 'cheats' page. Even now, a recording of "you can't give up just because something becomes difficult" would save me a lot of talking On 6/01/2011 8:54 AM, JAMES W MURRAY wrote:  Hi and Candy, Thanks for your input. , your son sounds just like mine. Guest guest
I recently learned that with Asperger's diagnosis, ADHD is automatically built in - it does not require a seperate diagnosis. I read this in the Autism Spectrum Disorder Resource Guide - A guide for parents - Fourth Edition by the ASA (Autism Society of America, San Diego Chapter). Hope this helps! Val Hello, We are new... Guest guest
When my daughter was a teenager one of her fixations was the news. She had and still does (she's 27 now) need to know what is going on in the world. What your son is doing is very typical of asperger's/autism. My daughter is more social now since I worked a lot with her showing her what kind of behaviors were socially acceptable and what wasn't. She wanted friends but just didn't know how to go about making or keeping friends. She has several friends today and now speaks at autism conferences on what it is like being autistic. Guest guest
Hello, I just wanted to clear something up, its not that he just watches it or plays the game, its the obsession with it. That he cant think of anything else, and has the cards in his hand constantly, and plays it every day at lunch and then the rest of the say at school, he basically cant concentrate and cant do his classwork because he cant come down from it. If it was a normal case of just really liking something it wouldn't be a problem, its the going overboard with it. I have gotten more calls from the school about those cards than I can count on both hands, and they caused him lots of trouble with other kids too.He even says he HAS to play Yugioh, not wants to but has to. Guest guest
Hello,Our son is 21. He was unofficially dx with Asperger's at age 18, and had the official diagnosis and evaluation completed just this past fall. It has been quite a process for him to accept this. He was always the smart, but eccentric, kid in his classes ... took every science class they offered during high school. He has never had any real friends, though he says he wants to have friends. He avoids anything social. There is a new aspie group in our area, and he says after every meeting (3 so far), that he is NOT going back. He has yet to speak during those. He is also OCD I suppose; has to eat at certain intervals, stretches every morning for over an hour, has to keep his room in the same arrangement and organized. He throws out anything he views as no longer useful - actually, it's worse, he shreds things. He is especially focused on certain topics; meteorology,philosophy/religion, and he tries one self help method after another in an effort to make himself more sociable. Yet, he does not grasp how to converse with people. He will talk to family and professionals. It only makes sense to him if there is a purpose to the words. He is currently attending a local University and does not understand, nor tolerate well, all of the chit chat and drama that goes on around him. We know he would love to major in meteorology or atmospheric science, but that major is not offered here. He would have to attend a school about a 4-5 hour drive from here. It breaks our heart as we know he loves that subject, but he knows he cannot make the move away. Another thing, which I am finding is more common than I thought. He will listen to, or watch, other Aspies and not identify with them. He doesn't see himself in them at all. While my husband and myself can see all kinds of similarities. Is any of this familiar with you?take care,MelaniOn Tue, Jan 4, 2011 at 9:17 PM, JAMES W <cmurray326@...> wrote My son was recently diagnosed with a mild case of Asperger's. He is fifteen? Guest guest
My son is not a teenager. He is ten, but he sounds exactly like your son. My son can fixiate on random topics and stay with them for a few months and learn everything about it and then he'll move onto a new subject. When he was four, he was fixated on geography. He could spell every country on the globe (even those tricky former Soviet Union countries) and knew all capitals and longitude - latitude lines etc. Then when he was 4 1/2, he picked up a book about presidents, and suddently he was fascinated with them. All my neighbors used to get a kick out of asking him some random number (1-44), and he could tell you which president it was, the vice president, the home state, and any other random facts. One day when we were in a grocery store, he started a conversation with the cashier, and as he always does, he asked her name and then birthday, and when she told him her birthday, he announced that she had the same birthday as McKinley (she didn't know that he was the 25th president, until he told her.) Then he moved onto composers because he started piano lessons. His current obsession is 1920s and 1930s gangsters like Dillinger. He's read very sophisticated 500-page biographies on a couple of them as well as countless other books. The interesting thing is that he compiles this info and then moves onto another topic, but remembers almost everything from all the subjects he's studied, even the ones way back when he was four. My son does fine academically, but -- like your son -- can totally blow a test if he is not interested in it. He's usually pretty good with math, but doesn't like doing a bunch of problems in a row. He prefers word problems. The other day, I gave him a work sheet to do on multiplying decimals. He did everything fine until problem 14, and then he just started writing random answers without doing any work I asked him why, and his answer was he just didn't feel like doing any more. We've also decided to homeschool, and it's working well for him. Unfortunately my son also doesn't socialize as much as I would like him to. He prefers talking to adults, and whenever I go to the homeschool park groups, he triest to spend the entire time talking to the other mothers rather than their children. I know it can be hard on a mom, because you want him to have friends, but as long as he seems happy....well, that's all we can ask for... Guest guest
My son was diagnosed with Asperger's last year when he was 14. He has been diagnosed with ADHD since he was in Kindergarden. When he was younger he was obsessed with Pokemon. Now however he has switched to anything that is military and that includes the video games. As far as the socializing, he never did until recently. There is one friend he has that he gets along with real well and I think the reason is that they have a similar diagnosis and the friends parents own a tow truck company just like we do. We live in a small town so there are not too many tow trucks around so they have something unique in common. Littlepage"The past is the same, but the present has no boundary." Guest guest
Hi there, Yes, that sounds familiar. Our son wants to join a social event but often bails out of it at the last minute or really fusses about going. He doesn't identify with kids his age. The only "friends" he has, is kids who play games online with him. Our son does well in English and History. He really struggles with math and will avoid it at all costs. He does have OCD. Checking refrigerators, stoves, and sinks. He worry about his family a lot. He is very sweet. Thanks for sharing. Cheryl Have a great day! He was unofficially dx with Asperger's at age 18, and had the official diagnosis and evaluation completed just this past fall. It has been quite a process for him to accept this.He was always the smart, but eccentric, kid in his classes ... took every science class they offered during high school. It breaks our heart as we know he loves that subject, but he knows he cannot make the move away.Another thing, which I am finding is more common than I thought. He will listen to, or watch, other Aspies and not identify with them. He doesn't see himself in them at all. While my husband and myself can see all kinds of similarities. Is any of this familiar with you?take care,Melani On Tue, Jan 4, 2011 at 9:17 PM, JAMES W <cmurray326@...> wrote My son was recently diagnosed with a mild case of Asperger's. Guest guest
Our son is about to turn 13, and though we don't have an official diagnosis, we're fairly certain he has Aspergers. It's interesting reading about all of the video game obsessions...none of which include any sports games...which is the same for our son. His favorites are the games, though I try to twist his arm on occasion to play a little NHL with me! Wayne > > Hi, welcome to the pokemon club. My son at 15 still loves it. Guest guest
Every comment in this thread pointed out the complexity of social interactions. As somone pointed out many kids do not need to think anout it...it just comes naturally. For those kids with aspergers and simialiar social ackwardness I highly suggest " Social Thinking " . If you google it you will see Winners blog, products, articles workshops.... There are various places, people and groups that use this methodology. I run a group in Northern NJ. > > > > > > > > >> > > >> Sorry..lost connection. I believe being social as hard as it may be, is the > > >> best.
