Guest guest
I got this from a grandparent today. I got a little choked up reading it. I thought I would share it with the group. Enjoy! I am the grandfather of 33 month old Cole who was diagnosed autistic in January. I attended what may have been your first parents meeting on Tuller Rd in February...and every meeting since. From your first presentation in Feb, I used your handouts to read on websites; buy books and started contacting doctors on your list. Toward the middle of April we started him on some basic supplements. He showed noticeable improvement from the beginning in general health and well being. We finally got in to see Dr Phil (DeMio) yesterday. Good thing I had called to make an appointment a week before he came down here in March. When I called he was backed up 5 weeks... it's now apparently 8-9 weeks (for new patients). Anyway, we were impressed that he spent almost 2 hours with us and was very thorough in terms of " history " taken and how he integrates supplements into the program. As he was giving my daughter the list of supplements to start on immediately and instructions of how / when to use them.... Dr Phil, seemingly almost as an afterthought, said to us: " why don't I give him a vitamin B-12 shot while he's here to give him a head start on the supplement program. " He told us that some kids don't react much at all and some get a little agitated as happens when you introduce any " new " something or other into a little one. He told us to pay attention to the first 24 hours to see if it helped and to see how he tolerates a strong dose of B-12. He said a small percentage of kids have shown significant verbal improvement but you never know how an individual kid will react. Now for the good stuff: Cole hasn't said 2 words since his last vaccinations at 18 months old.... well this morning when my daughter went to wake him up after a peaceful 10-11 hours of sleep she said to him: " Good Morning " and Cole sat up and answered back " Good Morning " Daughter almost fell over. Later this morning when he was thirsty he walked over to the refrigerator and said, " refrigerator " ... with near perfect pronunciation. During the morning he asked for " help " 3 times... simple one-word sentences of " help " but he had never done this before. Anyway.... he's saying meaningful words.... words you can understand ... and words used solely to communicate not just mimicking a sound he hears. It's probably been a total of less than 30 words today, but that's 30 more words than we've heard in over 15 months. And the first words we've ever heard from him to actually communicate a want or need. It's real proof that he has stored all this knowledge and understanding in his mind... we just need to continue to help him get it unlocked so he can use it. Of course, not every treatment any of us tries is going to work, but we have to all keep trying everything we can find until we find what works for our own individual children. Thanks for helping us to discover the bio-medical options Children's Hospital never would have told us about...(and even warned up against). We've only just begun this journey, but today we're so happy our feet aren't touching the ground. Jim
