Life has not been easy the past few weeks. My 13 year old was accepted into a partial hospitalization program on October 19. Two days later, the doctor chose to switch his medication from Abilify because he was on the Abilify when the incident happened at school and he had gained 60 lbs. Therefore, we figured it wasn't working for him. She put him on Geodon. Last Tuesday, he got upset about not getting to go to Target and kicked a hole in the wall. He has NEVER gotten that upset before. He was irritable, growly, etc. all the time on the Geodon and he said he felt it was the medication. Last Wednesday, he needed to be restrained TWICE at the program because he was out of control and Thursday as well, and they were considering hospitalizing him. In addition, he had already gained 6 lbs since being admitted to the program. During the incident on Wednesday, they gave him a fast acting dose of Zyprexa. He calmed down quickly and actually went to bed at 8pm that night. When they called Thursday saying they may have to hospitalize him, I asked them to give him the Zyprexa again, and he calmed down. The psychiatrist then decided that it was time for him to get off the Geodon and we switched him to the Zyprexa. Friday, GREAT day and great night at his social skills class from 5-8pm. Did great over the weekend. However, I am EXTREMELY concerned about my son's increasing appetite and now the doctor wants to add Metformin for weight gain. I would like to know if there are any other medications out there that others have found successful for aggression, agitation, etc. in the Asperger's kids. My son also has anxiety, adhd (takes metadate), sensory issues, NVLD. I am just not comfortable with him taking this Zyprexa and gaining a ton more weight. He is already up so much from the Abilify. Guest guest
Amy, thank you so much for writing to me. I appreciate knowing what others have tried that has worked. I know another mom on here suggested the Geodon but my son gained 6 lbs in a week on that med and his aggression increased to a level we had never seen before. I know each kiddo is different in the way they react to medications. However, it is still helpful to know what others have used rather than me just doing a search on the internet. Guest guest
Well, unfortunately, all adhd (except stratera) medications are stimulants. What this means is that its like speed or huge amounts of caffiene. In people with ADHD these stimulants are said to have the opposite effect and slow us down. ( I personally believe they cause an exasturbation... aka speed things up so much they exhaust the brain/body). They all can increase anxiety and anger. Ive been on adderall for years. Helps me with my impulsivity and some focus, and (makes you lose weight). I find if I dont eat, I get very angry on this medicaion, as with most. These meds you listed are for depression, not adhd. I would ask about concerta, straterra, or adderall for your son. My son is 12 and also adhd and Aspergers. When he was 4 he was on concerta but I took him off. (just my person preferance) He does have bouts of anger because of puberty. Im suspecting this is also a contributing factor for your son. Abilify is a medication added with an anti-depressant to help increase its effects. Again, my person opinion is to stop and listen to you self and your son. All medications need to be started at the lowest dose possible as we tend to be quick absorbers of medication and we can OD easily. Anti-depressants can increase moodiness and thoughts of suicide for those under 18. If hes getting worse. Take him off! I would find a doctor that specializes in this. Most DO NOT have the understanding or training. Find a young psychologist for your son that will be more aware. He shouldnt be in a hospital. If you'd like to talk to me you can email me at mlr3475080@... Ive worked at a school teaching autistic children and if hes having these issues, its most likely the school and not him.
