Meds are not a bad thing! Of course if used inproperly or over used they can be

bad... But I could not fuction properly without my meds! LOL I have never been

admitted to the hospital for psy issues... However I have admitted my 10yo son &

it was hard but also the best thing!!! For all of us... Where do you live? If u

end up going the hospital route I would try to research which program/hospital

would ne best for him.

Subj: 17 year old aspie/making No progress/what to do

Hi. I have a 17 year old aspie son who is getting worse as time

goes on. He rarely comes out of his room, won't eat properly, wash,

go to dentists, do his schoolwork, talk to anyone, leave the house,

etc., etc. He tells me all the time that maybe he will " next week " ,

but that's been going on for over 1 year.

He stays up all night talking to the computer and sleeps all day.

He's beligerant and tries to threaten with mind games.

I can't let him go on like this any longer. I'm afraid if I don't get

him treatment by age 18, he will not be eligible for help from state,

etc. The ironic thing is,...the kid is brilliant. Just doesn't use

it.

I'm taking him to a psychiatrist on Thursday for the first time in

the hopes of getting him on Medications. (this is per advice from

pediatrician)

If he doesn't go, I feel I will have to put him in hospital. He

barely gets out of the bed now.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this....Medication wise, or

any remotely similar experiences? Any thoughts in general would

be appreciated.

Please feel free to contact me off list if you wish.

thank you for listening.

With meds you might be able to switch his days and nights back to normal. For example Concerta to get him stimulated in the morning and Melatonin/ Tenex at night to slow him down. Perhaps some extra Benedryl on the nights he cannot turn the lights off! Your going to have to make him do like you would for a baby, no TV/ electronics before bed, a shower to relax, maybe read to him (I know you are thinking yeah right but perhaps after he's medicated you might actually be able to get him to do this! No late meals, etc. --2 hrs before bed. Again, hope this helps! you just described my 15 yr old aspie son to a tee, except he is glued to the

coputer all day, but plays mind games, sleeps in bed late, wont shower or change

his clothes, wont do his school work, just doesnt care..

he goes to hte psych but he tells her " I dont care " talks for about five min ,

then walks out.

he is on risperidal...helps very little if at all...I am loosing my mind,

I have a team called meet " me where I am at " coming in to help..

but they too said they are making very little progress...

If you haven't looked into guardianship for him (as an adult) NOW is the time.

At the rate he is functioning, he will be a legal adult with all of the

responsibilities per the law and it appears that he is functioning at much

younger ability. If you wait until he is 18 you will have to have his consent

and right now, it appears that is not in the picture. His clock is running out

for parental intervention and protection.

Good luck.

My son with Asperger's (now 30 yrs old) when he was a teen was never like this.

However my other son who doesn't have Asperger's was exactly what you described.

He sounds like any normal teen. Welcome to the challenges of parenting a

teenager.

One very important aspect of her growing up as that I was never alone. I always

asked for help when I needed it and I mean help from her case managers through

the years, O.T., P.T. Speech Therapists, etc. I could never have done what I

did for her without a team beside me. Rhoda
