we tried this with my son and are still doing it 2 years later it was one of the best things we did for himI love my Kids, Special needs and all! From: Littlepage <sniffles442@...>Sender: Autism and Aspergers Treatment Date: Sat, 8 Jan 2011 19:04:28 -0800 (PST)Autism and Aspergers Treatment <Autism and Aspergers Treatment >Reply Autism and Aspergers Treatment Subject: DisorganizationOn the advise of my son's therapist, we are trying something new. He now has one notebook instead of seven. We have taken different colored pocket folders and labeled them for each class and placed them inside. Those are for notes only. The first folder in there is a red one for homework only. One pocket is labeled for "to do" and the other for "turn in", all homework no matter the subject goes in this folder. There is also a pocket for pens and pencils. We were able to fit everything from his back pack including thebig folder for Auto Tech into the new folder. He says he will no longercarry a back pack. I want to test this out during this semester and if it works, I would like this to be added to his IEP. I think that having all those separate folders just adds to his disorganization. An additional idea is to "cover" each subject's hardcover textbook in the same color as the assigned subject folder. It will help significantly when taking books out of the locker...looking for the "red" book and the "red" matching folder is much easier to grab and will help with daily/hourly organization. From: "crazymisskitty@..." <crazymisskitty@...>Autism-aspergers

That is a good idea! Right now all his books stay in the classrooms unless he needs them for homework. He absolutely refuses to use his locker, so with him now having just one folder with all his notebooks in there reduces the size of his back pack. He has seven classes and each one of them required a separate notebook. Littlepage"The past is the same, but the present has no boundary." And one last suggestion, you are entitled to ask to have a duplicate set of text books at home in your IEP. This will avoid the "I forgot it at schooL" issue.

books around with him all the time--- I think because he is afraid he

Wow! What's with the locker stuff. I thought it was just my daughter. She never used her locker once in three years of high school (nor in jr. high), preferring to lug all her books around in a backback! (And she's tiny too.)

Nice to know she isn't/wasn't the only one.

p.s. Duplicate books would have been a good idea; never thought of it.

My son is in 11th grade and he refuses to put stuff in his locker as well. THat's how we came up with the duplicate books.

Best of luck.

My son was the same way! Did not want a locker at all... I thought it was strange to want to lug all those books around. Then the anixety took over and even with A's he still could not take school any longer. Our high school has over 2300 students in it... not as large as some but he was way to anxious etc to go. My son used one briefly in middle school during sixth grade. I remember going up there for parent night and cleaned it out. He had so much trash and paper that it took both of us two trips to empty it out. When we got home, all of it was spread all over my kitchen floor. He just used it as a trash bin. Now he has been doing the same thing with his back pack.

My AS  8th grade son has in IEP for books at home but he has wanted to carry back and forth we did it because I was forever running back and forth to school for books this year it has been  the alphasmart he forgets and has had to figure out back up plan ie principal has brought out. handwritten, or someone has to  go to school to pick up. He has a locker no lock on it though(his choice). In past he used 2 lockers and on an end so he could have enough space. He used one for books and one for coat etc he used locks too but could have increase frustration if lock did not open right away. He wants to be like the others but does like some of the accommadationsl. I hear they have locks that are " color " coded instead of numbers. We have tried the folders he loves the binder but does not keep the folders organizzed.

subject goes in this folder. There is also a pocket for pens and pencils. We

were able to fit everything from his back pack including the big folder for Auto

Tech into the new folder. He says he will no longer carry a back pack. I want to

test this out during this semester and if it works, I would like this to be

added to his IEP. I think that having all those separate folders just adds to

his disorganization.

Personally I'd push for a laptop. My son had an Alphasmart in 2nd and 3rd grade, but they upgraded him to a Laptop this year for 4th grade. The beauty of that is he can carry a thumbdrive and copy his work from the laptop at school and bring it home for homework on our PC, and take it back the same way. The thumbdrive is chained to his backpack. It makes life a LOT easier. I hear they have locks that are "color" coded instead of numbers. We have tried the folders he loves the binder but does not keep the folders organizzed.

My son was the same way! Did not want a locker at all... I thought it was strange to want to lug all those books around. Then the anixety took over and even with A's he still could not take school any longer. Our high school has over 2300 students in it... not as large as some but he was way to anxious etc to go. I now homeschool him and he is so happy (me too).

Wow! What's with the locker stuff. I thought it was just my daughter. She never used her locker once in three years of high school (nor in jr. high), preferring to lug all her books around in a backback! (And she's tiny too.)

Nice to know she isn't/wasn't the only one.
