Guest guest
Deborah, you said your son doesn't get homework anymore. How did you get them to do that? By the fact that he aces the tests? My son is horrible about doing his homework, even worse about getting his make up work when he misses a day. Is it written into his 504/IEP? I'm trying to do some research so that when his counselor FINALLY agrees to an eval of his 504, I can suggest some of these things. I'm trying SO hard to teach him about personal responsibility, and I know homework is a big part of that (like chores are, too), but with another set of "parents" who don't seem to think he's capable of handling simple chores (dishes, laundry, and the trash), he whines to them and gets out of his chores. This makes it really difficult to get him to do much. My mother, who raised a special needs child and preached the line of "treat them like they're just like every other kid" now pulls the "but he's not CAPABLE of it! When you add more responsibilities onto him, he regresses, so he shouldn't have any!" BS. Sorry to vent here and whine. This is just really a big sticking point for me.
