Guest guest
I went to a Grand Opening of a Plasma Center in Decatur,Illinois. I spoke to several donors and saw what happens. After their daily check up with the nurses before giving, they are hooked to a plasma machine that circulates YOUR blood and removes the plasma. They use a large needle and the donors can give twice a week. It takes 50 minutes, but some of the brand new machines take a little less time. The donors are paid $50.00 right after they give that day and they have alot of people giving. They are open from 7 to 7, 7 days a week. Hope this helps. Re: gammunex shortage , I think it's about the same as donating blood. May take a little longer since they " seperate " the plasma from the platelets and red and white blood cells. I think each blood component goes into it's own seperate little bag when donating that way. I donate blood at my kids school everytime the bloodbank comes and I know I've seen people in there that were giving special blood componetes..looked to me like they did about the same thing as a blood donation, they just seemed to be in there longer. I hope this helps calm your fears! Good luck!! Becki Reagon 6 yrs. CVID, asthma, reflux -- In , " " <iamlaurasmith@...> wrote: > > Hello everyone, > > Guess what? Guest guest
The kids and I visited 2 donation centers this fall. It seems tobethe same as giving blood in that there is only one stick. As far as taking the kids along- it would depend on their age/maturity. If you are apprehensive maybe you should go alone (w/o kids) first before taking them when you donate. My DS10 was enthralled by the process and even spoke with a donor about how it fells and how the machine works. My PID kid, DD8, was not happy seeing eveyone when they were hooked up with the tubing. She was fine with everything except seeing the blood run through the tubes. By the second visit she would not look at it. She did enjoy talking to the staff and donors(who were not hooked up). Another plus was donors seeing someone (especially a cute little girl) whose life they could be saving! DS still talks about our visits and wants to go again. The whole process is amazing- we learned a lot. We are hoping to be able to help with the nearest centers' fundraising this year. Guest guest
I used to give plasma but the denied me about a year ago because my iron level was low 6 consecutive times. I was told that I would need to get a docs ok in order to be able to give again and they only paid $30 a wack but twice a week. There was always a little bonus going on all the time though, like on the 8th donation of the month. I am now back at giving blood at because I am not going to go to a doctor just so I can give plasma. At they will check your iron before having to be screened and it has taken me since september to have an iron level high enough to give but this last time I did and they took double reds. What that means is they took twice the amount of red blood cells, only, and now I have to wait 4 months to be able to do it again.
