Glenda, are you worried because it is from a homosexual? I dont understand what you are saying.

They called me for a liver from a homsexaual person, and wanted to know if I wanted it. I want a new liver but I am on 51 and don't know if this the best for me. They said it will not hurt my chances, I am pretty close to the top and go to doctor tomorrow. Does anyone have an opinion.

Hugs and hoping for some responses. glenda ston

Glenda - I didn't realize your MELD had jumped out or you were next in line for a TP from your Center and Region. Right now as of this date and time 17,099 people are on the waiting list just for a new liver in the U.S. with the average per day at 17,000 people listed. Daily there is a dire shortage of usable donated HCV free livers for everyone listed for a liver transplant mainly from HCV ESLD with approximately only 6000 to 7000 liver transplants done per year. Transplant Centers will ask and usually have you sign a transplant medical contract asking if you will accept a HCV- clean or free donated liver only or if you will also accept a HCV+ donated liver in earlier stages than you to save your life if no other HCV clean liver is available but all medical information about your donor and condition of the donated liver be it free of HCV or not should be disclosed and told to you for you to make your final decision. I know you are confused and probably more confused with high ammonia levels and many other medical problems at this time. You may be only 51 but you are listed for a liver transplant in

ESLD and fighting for your life and so are the other 17,099 other people listed at this time. ESLD means exactly what it says - end stage liver disease - end of liver and end of life without a life saving liver transplant. The donor being a homosexual person is not the issue. Why was it told to you and what is the medical condition of the donor and donated liver ???? If you are free of HIV than a HIV free donated liver is usually only used for your transplant and to save your life. Do you also have HIV and with a co-infection of HIV/HCV ???? It's your decision to make if your donor be free of HCV or not and you need to know all the details - what to expect in the future - will you need a 2nd transplant - when and medically what will be done for you next. There is not enough clean HCV free donated livers or donated livers period for everyone listed for a liver transplant and for the majority it is medically know HCV will

return for the majority post transplant. A HCV free liver transplant is Not a cure for HCV. All The Best to You. Love - Hugs and Prayers. Deb

Glenda, They actually told you who the liver was from.. Isn't that a bit unethical??? I didn't know who my liver came from for a year.. And then it was cause (The Daughter) contacted me..But you know I wouldn't have cared who the liver came from ok..I needed one, and I got one..Also they check all with any liver for donation.. Kathy Brunow Transplanted March 30th 2004 in Milwaukee Wi.

Yes, my liver is very bad, and I have appointment, the person called me ask me about it because they have too. I did call back and it went to another donor some where else. She would not give a lot of info on donor, but said she felt I made a good decision, she said another hospital got it and someone had accepted it. I am very sick and just each day with some new happening I know each of you know what I am talking about. I just hope to make it until the next liver is better. Thanks G

no not all, I just had a option I had to make really quick. they did not say man or woman just 63 yrs homosexual. If I could take it all back i would. I feel like everyone is mad at me and think I am too good for it. That is not the case. I promise. It went to do someone else who most likely was more sick than me, and I pray that it will be ok. Hi again Glenda,

I dont think anyone is mad at you, at least I am not. I just wasn't sure of what you were saying and wondering why you were even told, and why that would make a difference, and if you were thinking clearly. Now I am hoping another liver will become available in time for you. Hang in there, we are all doing the best we can. I certainly wish the best for you.

No one is mad at you Glenda.. I'm just in shock they even gave you any information about the donor.. It really is unethical.Did you turn them down? I hope it wasn't cause the donor was homosexual. It really doesn't matter, their sexual preference you know..As long as the liver is good.At the hospital where I had mine, they have a support group, one guy there had a heart transplant and the donor had hepatitis C..Since this guy also had Hepatitis C, he said sure no problems.. The only person it actually bothered was his wife ok..But then again it wasn't her heart huh..He also had a liver transplant early this year.. WOW!!Boo

Glenda, I’m not mad at you either and I don’t

want you to get off the group. I know you’re confused and scared

right now. The only reason I can think that homosexuality would come into

it would be if the liver was HIV+, otherwise, I can’t imagine why they

would even bring it up. So I was confused, too. I know you will

make the right decisions for you.

Glenda no one is mad at you and they will only offer you the organ that is compadible with your blood type.I would want them to make sure that the donor was healthy.I would except a hep c doner if my liver was real bad and my hep c was still active.I plan on donating my liver cause I have only stage and grade fibrois so if someone needed a liver to get them by,they can have it but the recipient has to know about the hep c first.Take care hon and don't worry,no one is upset with you.If you are on the list you need a new liver.Just make sure it is a healthy one.

They will contact you and Tell you they have a candidate waiting to die.. They keep the donor on life support as long as they can..I talked to my Doctor yesterday, had interesting conversation... They do Ex-rays, blood work etc.. All this before they even off the liver..And no one tell you any thing about the donor.Doctor Van Thiel is very blunt and I will not repeat what he said about the people who told you the donor was a homosexual..Kathy
