Guest guest
, I was at doctors last week, and told the PA that I was hurting all over. She said it must be the weather because there have been a lot of Gleevec patients saying that they hurt - more than usual. I have been working on the house, climbing up ladders and painting... so I am in pain often just from that. Oh well, at least I can still do it. Guest guest
I was on protonix for acid reflux for years while on gleevec. If i missed a couple of days i was in bad condition Last summer I started having very big problems with acid and painful bm's. And lots of gas. I thought I should see a gastro dr but couldn't decide who to see. In the meantime at my 3 month check I was found to be failing gleevec. Was switched to sprycel and paniced when reading the instructions that said no acid reflux meds. Had to have it the first week a couple of times. I don't take it anymore and eat activia every morning. I feel better on sprycel and feel heartsick for the UK people who are threatened with no access to the 2nd generation cml drugs. Guest guest
Thanks for the heads up. I haven't had that bit of joy. It does kind of make sense since we have to take it on an empty stomach. Been slammed with a flu/cold since Wednesday--no family Thanksgiving for me. Just been hanging on the couch reading, sleeping, watching tv. I got the go ahead to take Sudafed, but have noticed it takes me a lot longer to metabolize it--almost 24 hours per pill! (this is normally a 4 hour pill). Can you say mini-pity party for one? :-) Beth [ ] side effect/Ariad  Hi everyone, I told my trial nurse I was having a lot of acid reflux. I have had it for years, and take Prevacid for it. She said it is one of the side effects of Ariad. i did not know that, and even went for an endoscopy to have things checked out.  And here I was changing my diet and trying to figure out why it was so prevalent, and it's the drug. Just thought I would mention it, as I am always bragging about this wonderful drug that gives me NO side effects.... a ( Bobby ) Doyle, dob 12/17/29 Brecksville, Ohio, USA DX 5/1995 Interferon 9 weeks/Hydroxyurea 5 years o2/2000 to 06/2002 Gleevec trial, OHSU 06/2002 Gleevec/Trisenox Trial, OHSU 06/2003 Gleevec/Zarnestra Trial, OHSU 04/2004 Sprycel Trial, MDACC, CCR in 10 months 04/2008 XL228 Trial, U of Mich. Guest guest
I think we are all entitled to a pity party every now and then, be it mini or major! I have suffered from heart burn since 1966, did not know what it was so went to the dr. to see if it was my heart. He never said it was heart burn or GERD or anything, just said keep doing what i was doing. And that was eating soda crackers or drinking milk. I never went anywhere without milk in the car for years. finally it got so bad I went to another doctor. And this was years later. He did an ultra sound, and an upper GI, and said I had a hiatal hernia (sp) , take Tums ! Some where along the line some dr. put me on Prevacid, and it has only been recent that the acid reflux hit again, which made me mention it to the nurse. Even with Prevacid, I sleep with my bed cranked up to a sitting position, thanks to a Craftmatic bed. But, it is not what I call a side effect, because I have had it for over 44 years! And I'm surely not complaining, I love this Ariad pill, and pray it continues to work, for all of us that are on it. Bobby a ( Bobby ) Doyle, dob 12/17/29 Brecksville, Ohio, USA DX 5/1995 Interferon 9 weeks/Hydroxyurea 5 years o2/2000 to 06/2002 Gleevec trial, OHSU 06/2002 Gleevec/Trisenox Trial, OHSU 06/2003 Gleevec/Zarnestra Trial, OHSU 04/2004 Sprycel Trial, MDACC, CCR in 10 months 04/2008 XL228 Trial, U of Mich. Just thought I would mention it, as I am always bragging about this wonderful drug that gives me NO side effects.... ____________________________ Hi Bobby and others interested in this topic, When I was on 800mg Gleevec for about 5 years (waiting for a new drug) I had quite a bit of acid reflux. When I had an endoscopy, the doc said I had esaphagitis (inflammation of the esaphagus) and gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining). I was quite a mess in his opinion and he wanted me to take Rx Prevacid (I think that was the one). My acid reflux was so bad that many mornings I would vomit a small amount of stomach juices. On the other hand, my oncology naturopath said that it was NOT good to take these meds, because they reduced the 'normal' stomach acid that you needed to digest food. All these drugs are acid, so we are dumping more acid into our stomach when we take them. The better route is to offset the acid with more alkaline foods or drinks. The product that I took that really turned this around for me was Acid Defense by Garden of Life. It is a powder that I dissolved in water and drank every PM before bed and every AM. (I am not sure that they are still making this product, there was a problem with it caking in it's container when it was not used on a regular basis). BUT basically it is an alkalizing formula that you can get in many ways. This made such a quick and huge difference for me that even Dr. Druker's nurse Carolyn started telling other patients about this product. When I had a follow-up endoscopy one year later, I did not have any of the previous problems (esaghagitis, gastritis) and that doctor assumed (incorrectly) that I was using the Prevacid. It is really important to have an alkaline diet to offset the acid we keep dumping into our systems with these drugs. I rarely have a problem now (but I am on Sprycel). There are many greens drinks that you can use to help these, they are all alkaline. The one I use the most is called Greens First (it is comparable to 10 servings of fruits and veggies). Sometimes if my stomach has been bothering me a little bit I will even use a green drink with my meal. The other thing that acid reflux does is cause tooth cavities and dental problems. I was getting small cavities at the base of some teeth that the dentist said was from acid reflux. This has stopped also. I was even using Tums a lot before, and now I never do (this was OK with Gleevec, at a different time than the med). So, this is a different approach to consider....than taking another med. If you can find " Acid Defense " by Garden of Life it is definitely worth a try. C.
Guest guest
G’day , I am on Tasigna and was dx with a stomach ulcer in July after experiencing stomach pain and bloating. I am back on Somac which has healed my ulcer, although I still have problems with some nausea at times and reflux/gastric pain (like a gall bladder attack), especially if acidic. I had a nasty attack when I was at my brothers for a birthday celebration and had a glass of wine and homemade sausage rolls………..was not a good mix! Now I make sure I have had something to eat before having any wine. I love Tasigna, however the longer I am on it (commenced August 2008), I am experiencing problems; now with aching muscles and fatigue, it is sooooo frustrating, but still 300 times better than when I was on Glivec. I am now taking Panadol Osteo which is helping – 2 tabs 3 times a day, slow release and I certainly know if I don’t take it. As a last resort I take Naprosyn SR but that plays havoc with my gut (I have low grade Crohns). My medical plan is Pandadol Osteo 2 x 8 hourly + Endone (usually at night if I can’t sleep) + Naprosyn x 4 days as required. I try to avoid taking Endone and Naprosyn works wonders bummer. I discussed the fatigue problem the other day with my haem/t and he said he has no doubts that the TKI’s cause fatigue and the aching muscle pains – still a small cost to be alive and otherwise well.
