Guest guest
I have heard nothing but BAD things about taking a drug holiday. From what I have heard and seen posted here, if you are doing well on your HAART regimin, stick with it! If you are having unmanagable side effects, talk to your doctor about switching meds. But don't do a drug holiday! I'd be curious why your doctor is suggesting such a thing; especially for a whole year! What benefit is your doctor suggesting the holiday would achieve for you? What seems to be happening for those who stop their meds is that their T-cells never quite recover to the point they were at before they stop taking the meds. Say your T-cells are at 800 now. If you stop your meds for 3 months for example, when you start up again, your T-cells won't ever get above 600 or 700. Next time you do a drug holiday, they will recover to only 500 - 600, etc. There will be a steady decline over time. That's what the latest research is showing. And for what? Not sure what anyone else in the group thinks but I would strongly advise against anyone taking a drug holiday unless there was a very specific reason and never for an entire year, possibly a few months at most and with monthly blood work closely monitored by your doctor. Bottom line... stick with what is working for you or discuss alternatives with your doctor (or get a second opinion from an experienced HIV specialist). regards, -Matt
