I use Sodium Hydroxide (dry, pelleted) for my soap making.

It is purchased thru a chemical supply company locally.

I must buy 50 POUNDS at a time, call ahead of need, sign

extra paperwork, have business license on file with them and

sign additional statement that I am not a terrorists. SHEESE!

It used to be so much easier when Red Devil sold lye in 18 oz

cans at the grocery store!

Which type of lye do you use and where do you get it?

Hi ALL,

They got arround the law change by changing the drain cleaner formula.

Other stuff sold as " drain cleaner " is not pure lye. They have

cut the lye with several other chemicals that should not go into

your soap and will give you less than predictable results.

Before you try a new recipe for soap, you need to run it thru a soap

calculator to check amounts for proper saponification. (lye to fat ratio)

If you do not check the recipe out, you could end up making a very harsh

soap OR a soap that is beyond super fatted that will spoil.

You also need a very accurate scale to weigh everything.

Coconut oil is said to be very drying to your skin but makes great bubbles.

Emu oil carries everything through your skin, in some cases, that worries me.

I use a set recipe for my GM soap and do not vary it, except for fragrances.

Zoe,

You need to be careful when substuting one fat for another.

Each change will change the amount of lye needed.

That is why every new recipe really needs to be run thru a soap

calculator.
