Mother has promised to go to jail rather than send her daughter,

with Asperger's syndrome, back to school where she was bullied

LURGAN, Northern Ireland: The defiant mother of an 11-year-old girl

with Asperger's syndrome who suffered a broken bone in an alleged

bullying attack vowed on November 25 to go to prison.

The worried mother, Margaret Graham, told Sunday Life that she was

willing to be jailed if she was forced by the Southern Education and

Library Board to send her daughter, , back to school.

The young girl has been off school for two weeks, after she was

attacked outside Lurgan Junior High School earlier this month.

Graham told how her daughter was subjected to a terrifying ordeal by

a girl pupil, who, she claims, called her vile names before

punching, kicking and jumping on her.

The mum-of-two said that was chased from Lurgan Junior High's

after-school project, which is located just outside the school,

before being set upon.

Said Graham, of Toberhewny Hall: " If it means my daughter not

getting another beating by being off school, then I will go to

prison. She has already been off for two weeks, but if I have to

keep her off for two years I will do it. No child should have to go

through what she went through.

" All I am asking is that the school guarantees her safety, and until

they are able to do that she won't be going back to school. " I've

had a meeting with the school, but nothing else has been planned and

I am still very angry at this whole situation.

" I moved here because it meant being close to a school and I

don't want to put her on any buses. Once I get the assurance she

will be safe, then she will be going back to school. "

Mr ston, the school's principal, confirmed the young girl had

not returned to school.

He said: " The school is trying to resolve this issue and is hoping

to have a meeting with Mrs Graham to discuss it. I can assure

everyone that the school environment is as safe as any post primary

setting in Northern Ireland and that we have policies, practices and

procedures in place to ensure this is the case. "

A police spokeswoman said: " Police are investigating a report of an

assault on an 11-year-old girl outside a school in Lurgan. "

Why aren't charges being filed against the parents of the attacker ?

This mother is doing what in her rights to protect her daughter! Until

the matter is investigated why should she be worried about being jailed?

Won't the school just give the mother her daughters work or assignments

she's been missing until they have this resolved?

It's the way the non-Aspie world works. The bullies aren't really

breaking any laws but the mother is by not sending her kid to school,

therefore the mom is bring prosecuted while the bullies run free.

Oh but the bully is breaking the law and if this mom's got the gumption

to stand up to the law she could be calling out the parents of the bully

and demanding a fine, a court date, something! If a reporter can write

about the mother standing up for her child this mom should contact

him/her to follow up with the information about the bully to prevent

future attacks. The child should have some punishment. An article to

give her and the parents a little public reprimand or humiliation would

be a start.

Sorry to play " Devil's advocate " again, but hey, it's a job...

Based on my recent censored-except-for-the-Admins-and-their-friends

torture discussion, do you really think Aspies are all that different?

After all, isn't this just another virtual herd--one with a funny

gnostic name? Herds exist to provide Safety-In-Numbers, to make the

ancient " Us vs. Them " passion play more believable. Well, it just

seems like the same old bullsh!t to me. But instead of implying that

it's some NT bullsh!t, we should own up to it by calling it " our

bullsh!t " too.

Don,

The reality of it is a great many of the people in this group have been

bullied, pushed around, and have seen injustice imposed by those who do

not see the world through the eyes of someone with Asperger's. It may

not be right of anyone here to group Non Aspies in a way that proposes

that ALL think there is nothing wrong with beating someone who looks,

acts, or speaks differently than the norm. We are all human and tend to

lash out or have a glommy outlook when stressed, which is what holidays

and family get togethers so often produce.

That is what I believe is the cause of the grouping in this case. From

my prespective, there are days I hate the world and become depressed

when I see a lack of good will or understanding. I see comedians group

ethnic races, sterotyping them, getting laughs, and making a good buck

doing it. I thought this " grouping " of Aspies and Non Aspies is what

your post was refering to and if so, your right to point out that it's

unfair for any of us to assume ALL of any group could be anything. We

had a saying in my home, I believe I heard Colbert say it too, that

those who act without thinking are Sheepole instead of people. I would

use the term to describe family or friends who forward e-mails with dire

warnings or get rich schemes without authenticating the story first.

They always seem to have the time to forward the BS but never bothered

to write and say how the family, kids, etc. were doing.

In an fisty insinuating way you are fun. No one is allowed to misstep

around you because you felt bruised before. It is a sort of cute

grudge holing I am not accepted by anyone kind of way. I think AS has

that effect. We have been battered and abused for so long we expect it

and when we aren't treated that way we go looking for it. I am glad

you are still here and I am sure you have stuff to add. I felt a

similar way when I arrived. I was used to being forced to prove myself

and be good enough. Often I am as guilty for not moving foward as my

detractors for subjugating me. I am as afraid of making strides as my

abusers were of me becoming stronger. I am contemplating graduate

school, and I had planned to post to the group my fears around

being " strong " and therefor vunerable. Don I have to tell you thanks

to your post I don't need a pep talk. I think S* & ^w them if they can't

take a joke,is the better way to go. At least you are not afraid to be

contraversial, or muddy sometimes. Look you are correct people

basically suck. regardless of where they happen to be standing at any

given moment. It is fairly improbabble to be impeccable all of the

time. As much as I would like to act with confidence, and conscience

and be completely objective and Solomanesque (and emit light by the way

if I am making a wish list) always wanted to do that. I believe we

are caught by evolution as charged. I am not sure my going to school

was your desired effect but for some reason you continued desire to

assert yourself, has made me feel empowered. mimi oh Raven I was

thinking of appealing to you, your determination and kind words make me

feel more capable. The fact that many of you exsist and choose to be

heard. So I guess I found what I was looking for thanks mimi

I believe it is mentioned in the rules that profanity should be kept

to a minimum. Given your behavior on the board whenever you post, I

am putting you on moderation.

You may post, but they will come through the admins first, and we

reserve the right to edit them from profanity and/or content.
