Hello!

I'm a new member, thanks for having me. I have a 5 yo son dx'd with

Asperger's a few months ago. We have an odd story in that our son was

developing " normally " (except for a host of allergies) until age 4

when he was hospitalized with a virus that led to viral meningitis

and after that he was never the same. In fact, we just about lost him

into full blown autism. Initially, autism never crossed our minds,

and we thought it was behavioral issues. When we took him to therapy

it came out that he has post traumatic stress disorder: he had

surgery as a toddler and he remembers it. Apparently there was

anesthesia awareness. We spent months and thousands of $$ helping him

with that, and still he was sinking further into autism. (I have my

own theories as to why - on a physiological/chemical basis). The

waiting lists for an assessment once we suspected autism at such a

late age of onset, were so very, very long. We started some

therapies and treatments on our own. A lot of alternative medicine

stuff - (I work in the natural health field). We saw improvement w/in

3-4 months and by the time he was diagnosed, we were fortunate that

he was doing well enough to be dx'd with Asperger's.

He continues to make improvements. I don't know anyone else who

understands the day to day stressors, worries, struggles and joys of

living this, and just hope to find a community who understands and is

hopeful for a bright future for their kids.
