Guest guest
A couple weeks ago, and and a few others were talking about nano technology. Tonight I found this online:http://ca.news./s/reuters/070131/tecnology/tech_britain_nanomachine_col Scientists build nanomachine envisioned 150 yrs ago Wed Jan 31, 1:02 PM By Reaney LONDON (Reuters) - Nearly 150 years ago it was no more than a concept by a visionary scientist, but researchers have now created a minuscule motor that could lead to the creation of microscopic nanomachines. ish physicist Clerk Maxwell first imagined an atom-size device dubbed Maxwell's Demon in 1867. Scientists at the University of Edinburgh have made it a reality. "We have a new motor mechanism for a nanomachine," said Leigh, a professor of chemistry at the University. A nanomachine is an incredibly tiny device whose parts consist of single molecules. Nature uses nanomachines for everything from photosynthesis to moving muscles in the body and transferring information through cells. Scientists are trying to unravel the secrets of nanomachines and nanotechnology, which works on a tiny scale. One nanometer is a billionth of a meter, or about 80,000 times smaller than the thickness of a human hair. "Molecular machines allow life itself to occur at a molecular level. Our new motor mechanism is a small step toward doing that sort of thing with artificial molecular machines," Leigh told Reuters. His mechanism traps molecular-sized particles as they move. As Maxwell had predicted long ago, it does not need energy because it is powered by light. "While light has previously been used to energize tiny particles directly, this is the first time that a system has been devised to trap molecules as they move in a certain direction under their natural motion," said Leigh who reported the findings in the journal Nature. "Once the molecules are trapped, they cannot escape." Leigh credits Maxwell for establishing the fundamentals for understanding how light, heat and molecules behave. In an earlier study, he and his team showed that a nanomachine could move a drop up water uphill by using molecular force. Although the movement was small, it was a big step in learning to make machines with artificial molecules. The new motor mechanism will enable scientists to do things that are much closer to what biological machines do. Nanotechnology is already being used in cosmetics, computer chips, sunscreens, self-cleaning windows and stain-resistant clothing. Leigh believes nanoscale science and engineering could have a huge impact on society -- comparable to the impact of electricity, the steam engine and the Internet. But quite how, is difficult to predict. "It a bit like when stone-age man made his wheel asking him to predict the motorway," he said. "It is a machine mechanism that is going to take molecular machines a step forward to the realization of the future world of nanotechnology. Things that seem like a Harry Potter film now are going to be a reality." Copyright © 2007 Reuters Limited. All rights reserved. Guest guest
I'm interested in the possibilitic delusional disorders related to this technology. Such as one believe they have machines in there head controlling their thoughts. ravenmagic2003 <ravenmagic2003@...> wrote: >> COOOOLLLLL!!!!!!!!! Guest guest
...but there ~are~ "machines" in my head "controlling" my thoughts! One way of viewing our brains is as collections of many tiny incredibly complex machines. Of course, that is just one view, sometimes in philosophy referred to in attempts at disparaging terms as "materialistic" or "reductionist". (That all mental activity can be "reduced" to matter, for example.) But this leads into arguments about free will and souls and so on that I'd just as soon not go through... In psychology I think there is something called dissociative personality disorder- where something like different personalities within a person emerge...well the now-old thing called multiple-personality disorder. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple_personality_disorder ..which includes the sentences.. "Other symptoms include: Depersonalization, which refers to feeling unreal, removed from one's self, and detached from one's physical and mental processes. The patient feels like an observer of his life and may actually see himself as if he were watching a movie. Derealization refers to experiencing familiar persons and surroundings as if they were unfamiliar and strange or unreal." ...and on searching the wiki text for schiz, I find... "Regardless of whether the disorder is termed dissociative identity disorder or multiple personality disorder, it is in no way related to schizophrenia. Although schizophrenia and dissociative identity disorder are commonly linked in the minds of lay people, it is a misconception." I suspect the difference is that in dissociative personality disorder there isn't the subjective sense that another entity is inhabiting one's mind, but in certain cases of schizophrenia-- auditory hallucinations where the person is hearing voices in their head-- there is? Guest guest
No wonder Hollywood is so diagnosable. They are trained / taught to be of different personalities. I'm not sure why you brought up multiple personalities but the syndrome of symptoms I have never seen myself. I think it is rather rare but delusion on the other hand is natural and common. It is when delusion itself becomes a complex or simply said a manifestation of a collective of multiple and seemingly complex delusion al belief (non-subjective and non-factual) is my interests. Persons might have a false belief simply but not have a complex of delusions. For instance a God complex I bring up people get so pissed off at me for thinking intellectually concerning. A belief in god might be more simple then a very complex one but always more then just a simple belief. It is based upon the whole of reality but is a belief in God the same as a belief in machines in your head?(Note: A stabilized equalibrium psychosocially in any shared delusional complex which does not share parnoia on average is common. So delusion does not inherently mean a loss of functionality, it can even increase functionality psychosocially.) Machines in your head compared to a God Complex.... One is more emotional then the other. For instance God is emotion based and is related to the fear of death and the importance of self such as the super ego. While the machines are conspiracy and or possibilic in technology. Reductionism has little to do with a true manifestation of a delusional complex such as machines controlling your thoughts you were sharing humor concerning.
