If your goal is to avoid ever triggering any sort of Social Security disability review, I would recommend keeping monthly income (whether from W-9 or W-2) below $720 per month. As 's second link below points out, earning more than $720 in a month will make that month count as a "Trial Work Month." Once you have completed nine trial work months in a five year period (they don't have to be consecutive), you will have exhausted your trial work months, and you will probably trigger a disability review within a few years (see below). Although that disability review may not result in a termination of benefits, anyone seeking to avoid disability reviews should not exhaust their Trial Work Months. You must earn more than $1,000 per month for your earnings to count as "Substantial

Gainful Activity (SGA)." After your nine trial work months are exhausted, you enter a 36 month "Extended Period of Eligibiiity," during which you will receive a benefit check for any month that your earnings are below SGA and you will not receive a check if your earnings exceed SGA. Consistent earnings above SGA will probably result in termination of benefits when the SSA does a disability review after the Extended Period of Eligibility is ended. If you earn more than $1,000 after the end of your Extended Period of Eligibiltiy, your benefits will be terminated immediately. As 's links below point out, you are supposed to report any work activity to the SSA by the 10th day of the month following the month that you performed work. Many SSA offices won't bother taking a report for a month when earnings are below $720. The SSA will eventually find out about any work activity reported on W-2s or W-9s, and this can result in immediate termination

of benefits and overpayments if you have earned more than $1,000 in any month after the end of the Extended Period of Eligibility.

I would try to avoid W-2 income. W-9 related income (as a as-hoc consultant) is

different than W-2 which means you have a job.
