I remembered the word after you said it.....

borborygmi

Borborygmus is an abdominal gurgling sound attributable to the passage of

fluid and gas within the intestines. It is enhanced when gastrointestinal

motility is increased, e.g. in obstructive conditions and in irritable bowel

syndrome, and when excessive flatus is present.

Classically, borborygmi begin at a low pitch and get louder and of increasing

pitch over approximately 30 seconds.

The plural of borborygmus is borborygmi.

Yes, you guys are correct: the reason it is louder with a hernia is

because it is closer to the outside, less insulation to muffle sound.

I think borborygma is the word, or some darn thing. I am not in the

mood to go find a medical dictionary to look the correct spelling up

so I will leave it for Jim to correct. He is my lazy woman's

dictionary! LOL!

Otherwise, they are known in my community as " bowel sounds " and they

are considered desirable if they rumble, not so if they tinkle or

are silent. They are caused by peristalsis of the fluid and air and

are noisier in areas where there are valve-like changes.

But didn't you tell me, Marta, that your noises didn't get better with your

hernia repair (when we were at the dairy buying cheese curds)? How are your

noises now -- are they quieter?

Ann, the problem is that I am thinner and there is less insulation

over the gut to block the sound. And man, it kicks like a mule

sometimes! My left side, near my ribs, hooboy! Like a war in there

many days.
