Hello everyone,

O.K. - I'm officially ready to start giving my son Valtrex,

prescribed by Dr. G. I hope that everyone can give me their best

tips, recommendations, etc. on how to get the medicine down. I have

not filled the prescription yet, but understand that it's in a pill

form? If so, do most of you crush the pill and then administer with

a favorite food? Can you give it in a drink?

Thanks for any advice from someone that's already been there, done

that!

When we have icky pills that my son needs to take, we have a compounding

pharmacy make it into a flavored liquid and he could just take it by the

teaspoon.

We crushed the pill (after wiping off the blue coating with water; the dye

irritates some kids) and mixed it with applesauce. Our son took it with no

problems. Good luck.

Debbie,

I tried grinding up the valtrex into a powder and putting it into things, but I

found that to be very cumbersome, with the powder going everywhere and my son

not wanting to take a 2nd and 3rd bite of whatever it was in. I now just give

him the whole 1/3 tab in a soft gfcf cookie or spoon of soy ice cream, anything

easy to conceal it in, and I have had no problems so far (knock on wood). It is

much easier for us to get it over with in one bite. Take care, KathyP

Hi again Debbie;

Valtrex comes on a pretty large pill (in the shape of a capsule). It is

coated in a blue dye that needs to be washed off as it may cause

hyperactivity. Our dosage suggests we cut the pill in half. This makes it

managable for . The pill can be cut into even smaller pieces if

needed. We give Nick 1/2 pill three times/day. Thank goodness Nick takes

his meds/pills with water. Now if only we could get him to eat like that!!!

We started by putting it in food - but off course a bite into it tastes so

bad he was turned off it.

We now crush and mix it with 5ml baby juice (white grape or pear) in a

syringe it still tastes pretty sour but - he justs administers it himself

now!!

Hi there -

We have used B & B Pharmacy in Bellflower, CA for compounding our banana

flavored Valtrex for over two years. (562-867-1471). I specifically ask

for a pharmacist named " Neil " . You must watch to see how low you are

getting on your Valtrex to give them plenty of time to compound it and ship

it so you are not out of medicine. I have been caught waiting by the

mailbox a few times, but now that I specifically ask for " Neil " , I have not

had this problem. You call them, ask for Neil, tell him what you want, they

call Dr. G's office to confirm the prescription and hopefully ship it out

the same day. Also remember to tell them if there is a change in dosing as

sometimes that is not relayed from Dr. G's office. The banana tastes better

than the crushed up pills, but it still has an aftertaste. I use this

liquid to give her some of her other medicine (crushed up Feosol in the

Valtrex, crushed up Lamisil, powdered Prozac). One dose makes it easier and

she is so good about the medicine she just drinks it down. Just a note, I

called up a pharmacy in Michigan (where we are) and they were going to

charge us something like $75 a month to compound the Valtrex. This was on

top of the co-pay. So, we are sticking with Neil for now. The compounded

Valtrex must be refrigerated, so I make sure I am watching the mailbox and

put it right in the fridge when I get it. (My question is also, how much

potency does this stuff lose while being shipped unrefrigerated?? Anyone?)

Another thing, if you are looking for specific doses of Prozac (or other

SSRI's), we use Friendly Hills Pharmacy in Whittier, CA at (562-698-0909).

When we were tweaking the Prozac, we went from doses of 6.5 to 7.5 and are

now at 8.5. I found it impossible to tell exactly how much I was actually

giving her and it made quite a difference. So, we called up this pharmacy

and told them the dosing information and shipping address. Same thing, they

call Dr. G's office to confirm and ship it out. I also order my Kutapressin

from them as I had trouble getting it locally. I have never ever had a

problem with these guys in 18 months.

Some of the posts lately have involved coordinating travel information to

California. Maybe we could also make a list of pharmacies that are good to

deal with and other " Parent tips on how to best get the medicine down " .

Just a thought. Good luck.

Agreed on putting the pharmacy info in the pak - we also use Friendly Hills

in Whittier as recommended by Dr G's office - ask for Dennis Amano. Best to

call in and then confirm on e'mail. They ship overseas (as well as domestic)

and take care of all the paperwork, send the waybill no. for easy tracking

at this end - saves waiting at the post box! - usually takes 2-3 days from

ordering!! Make sure if you are overseas you understand your import/customs

laws. They ship all our meds to Singapore via - UPS. For a start, everything

is half price compared to what we pay out here - more than compensates for

the $50 shipping fee. They will compound to odd doses in capsules, liquids

etc. They also ship our basic supplements and some other things like Iron

Sulphate elixir, poly vi sol, tri-acting nightime, and NasalCrom.

hope this helps.

I have noticed that lots of parents are not getting adequate coverage for

medication. Every hospital is equipped with a special pharmacy that can give you

the medicine in the form your child can take. I usually give Dr. G's written

prescription to a local Pediatrician who rewrites it. In doing so I get

insurance coverage and medicaid so I don't pay for any shipping or extra money

for any medication. When needed to take amphoteracin B, the pharmacy put

in the order and put in a grape flavored solution. As for valtrex, I was lucky

just chews it. As a reward I used to give him one gummy bear (yellow).

Hope this helps
