The process went from anal pap smear ( which I am told is almost always abnormal ( it was ) --> high resolution anuscopy ( which showed the localized dysplasia ) --> biopsy ( which looked even worse , but not cancer ) --> IRC ( Infrared Coagulation ). At the time of the appointment, the doctor did another High Resolution Anuscopy just to double check everything. There is no preparation required except to stay away from aspirin for about a week before the procedure to avoid excessive bleeding . I also got a script for some pain killers which I have been using very sparingly. It is not a super comfortable procedure, and not especially dignified either ( wear a jockstrap for modesty and to keep your awesome junk out of the way ), but it is not painful either. The device used in IRC ( Infrared Coagulation ) looks like a Star Wars version of those long snouted cigarette / candle lighters. And basically, they do " light it " up in dere.... but it's fine. So far, extremely minor bleeding, and normal bowel movements. Just be careful in between going to the bathroom to drink lots of water so that stool remains soft and easy to evacuate. The procedure was done by Dr. Stier who I cannot recommend enough. I think she is an angel, who knows her stuff, is kind, and made me feel more comfortable that I ever imagined given the fact that she was up my ass with a gun and some attending nurse. If you can get the attending nurse to tell you stories about her kids to distract you... all the better... mine did. The whole thing takes about 30 - 45 minutes. It is very bearable....put it this way...the dentist can be worse. Dr Stier wants High Resolution Anuscopy become the standard of care. If you search for her on the internet, you will find a number of her published papers. I believe her to be the best of the best, and if your insurance covers it, she is so competant and so kind and decent that I would say travel to Boston to see her. Once this is done.... you will be getting an anal exam every 3 months... but this is so much better than having to see an Oncologist ! If you have questions about my individual experience... please use this web site and not my direct email ; I would like as many guys as possible to have the information and not be afraid of this process or the procedure itself !
