Guest guest
BJ, Are you all out of therapists you can call? That is truly hard to believe! I know that when my son was bad I called a bunch of therapists and when I was crying so hard because I was so frustrated, she stayed late to squeeze us in within 2 days. Now granted, she wasn't the best therapist in the long run, but just to know someone cared helped us alot, and it did help him to open up to someone other than us. My son also has bad thoughts ocd, and he is not on medication. I believe in meds ... that is now what I am saying ... but truly what helped us is: Calcium/magnesium supplement (we use Dr.'s Advantage Liquid Calcium/Magnesium) Cod Liver Oil At first, we just took emulsified cod liver oil from the nutrition store. It was orange flavored and took about 2 tsp. day. We have since switched to Coromega, orange flavored only because we read about possible mercury in fish oils that are not purified. PureCalm by Native Remedies We also use Mindsoothe, Jr, but that would not work with an SSRI, as it mimics the same effect. My son has not suffered from bad thoughts for over a year. He does get an occasional bad thought or worry, but he does not suffer. he is able to talk through it and it leaves. Where do you live? I am asking because someone on this board recently got his son helped at Duke Med Ctr by someone working with Dr. March. He was so pleased with his son's progress. I think any of the bigger medical centers with ocd treatment programs can usually help sooner even on an outpatient basis. I know his son was going every week for a little while, now I think they were down to 1x month,e tc. I know the hell you go through when you look in your child's eyes and see that " look " and you know they are taken over by those thoughts. My heart goes out to you and your son. How nice his friend tries to help and that he knows and understands your son. That is a true friend and a rarity among children. What a blessing for your son that he knows and still is his friend. Kind Regards, in TN svdbyhislove <BJClosner@...> wrote: Then she proceeded to tell me he should have gotten help earlier. Gee, you think?! I told her I've been desperately trying to find him some help for 2 months now. In the next breath she told me she isn't scheduling until June. Hmmmmmmm, yet another 2 1/2 months away. <rolling eyes> I think the bottom line was she didn't want to take us because she didn't accept our insurance. I told her we would pay out of pocket, but she didn't like that either. I don't know, maybe she is in over her head. Either way, I refuse to believe he is beyond help. It's that time of the month for me too, so I'm not in the mood to put up with crap. lol I tell you, our boys sound alike. Josh also had more ritual stuff before, and this time around, now that he's a teen, it is more " bad thought " stuff. His computer and Wii has been a life saver. When the meds started working, he was able to get off of the sofa, but because they aren't working enough to make it go away, he is doing whatever he can to get his mind off of the repetitive thoughts. We've played lots of board games and have watched lots of movies too. It's been his way of coping while I've tried to find someone who knows what they are doing that can help us. Honestly, we don't know what else to do. We are just trying to get through the days, one at a time. He does comment occasionally that he wishes he could have time where he didn't have to keep himself busy. . where he could just relax. It makes me sad to hear him say that, because I don't know what to do to help him. We are also very blessed that Josh's best friend lives next door and he comes over and helps distract Josh. They even get outside on nice days and ride bikes. He knows Josh has OCD and tries to help him. Is interested in games, music, movies? something that can help him have a small break from his thoughts? I know my nephew, who also has OCD, said music was a huge help when his " bad thought " OCD was really bad. I realize they need to confront the anxiety, but they can't do it 24/7, can they? I would think even they need a break now and then. BTW, you were making perfect sense. . .she wasn't. <grin> Hugs back, BJ > > > > I just got off of the phone with yet another therapist. Guest guest
Some info I was given was to call the people in your state who are on the oc foundation website and ask them for referrals of anyone in your area. Also, any medical schools at universities are usually a big source for help and/or referrals. I know, you don't give up when it is your child! They are far too precious for that. Oh, boy do I hope you find someone soon. svdbyhislove <BJClosner@...> wrote: Are you all out of therapists you can call? That is truly hard to believe! No, not yet. It seems my circle keeps widening. I'm working on therapists about 2 - 2 1/2 hours away from us now. It just keep getting farther away from us. I guess that is part of the problem of living in a rural area. Although, we are only a half an hour from our state capital. But, I have called a lot. I've been on the phone every single day, trying to find someone. It seems there aren't many out here in western Washington that know much about OCD. I can't give up though. BJ > > > > > > I just got off of the phone with yet another therapist. All excellent suggestions - after months of searching & calling around, we finally found the one psychologist qualified in treating OCD in kids right here in our own back yard!!! Who knew?! She had been here the whole time, we just never knew about her. LT ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. Guest guest
Oh, Good for you! That sounds like it could develop into something very positive! Now, my next step is to start calling around. My son is thankfully not in need of services at this time, so ... the smart thing to do would be to call around and get referrals and talk to some of these people so that if and when he does, I will be armed for battle! Keep us updated. in TN svdbyhislove <BJClosner@...> wrote: Thank you, , for the info. Unfortunately, I've already done that. I've also contacted the Children's Hospitals in the area and the University of Washington. FYI, one of the men on the list is on probation in our state for inappropriate behavior in a session with a patient and some is of a sexual nature. Pays to check them out, I guess. I found a lady in Portland, Oregon, today that seems to know what she it doing, but she is not accepting anyone new because she is leaving the country in July. Bummer! But, she gave me a couple of names I left messages with. Onward. BJ > > > > > > > > I just got off of the phone with yet another therapist.
