Hi all,

Sorry for not having posted in a while. I'm curious if someone might

have suggestions on how to get tested if you don't yet have a child,

which currently does not appear to be in the cards for me :-(, and with

out insurance.

I live in a suburb of Los Angeles, CA. So I'm thinking that UCLA would

be a good starting point, but exactly how do you go about getting tested

for little or no cost?

Before you even look into getting tested you might want to ask

yourself what the motives are and look at the implications of a test

that shows you do indeed have AS. If you do not disclose a " pre-

existing condition " to your insurance or possibly some of your

employers, it may come back to haunt you.

There are self-diagnostic tests available in the Links section.

If these unofficial tests suggest you have AS, you might try doing a

web search for Tony Attwood's website and looking for links to people

and places which specialize in AS.

I am diagnosed, but there is no paperwork in existence stating that I

am diagnosed. I have chosen to keep my diagnosis unofficial.

I would not advise going to a university for diagnosis because you may

find yourself involved in some sort of study, or else the professors

there may be more bogged down in ego than well-versed in psychology.

I am having AS testing tomorrow for myself. Ravi has some testing the

next day and my ex may test as well. It is with a

university/hospital. I will post my experience if it is helpful.

I don't know if this will help you any, but both my child and

I have been diagnosed and it hasn't made any difference in our

lives. Neither of us receive any services although our government

claims to have all sorts of programs and services in place. While

it's true they have programs and services, they make it impossible

for us to access them. Therefore, neither my son's diagnosis nor my

diagnosis has changed anything in our lives.

I have always known I was unlike others and accepted long ago that

this is how I was made and I was made this way for a specific reason

and purpose in mind. When my child was born and over the years he

has been around, I have accepted that he with his AS and other co-

morbid disabilities was made the way he was made for a specific

reason and purpose as well.

So if you are hoping that a diagnosis will give you carte blanche to

be yourself with greater understanding from those around you, I

would strongly suggest that you begin within yourself and then

accept that others in your environment -- even with knowledge of

your diagnosis -- will rarely be understanding of your AS.

Isn't it a good enough reason to know that you are made the way you

are because you are to accomplish something unique and specific and

individualistic based on the uniqueness of you?

Initally I wanted a difinitive answer for myself to explain: I am odd

because,... but in reality I will likley not tell anyone. Those who

know me already know and even members of my family would prefer not

knowing. I too have always been the black sheep(maybe white sheep)

but anyway different. I just think it is another opportunity to be

honest with myself. demystify my life. Mystery is simply the

unknown, and I have always wanted to know. I am Faustus, but not for

money or glory but just to know. That is really my tic. because it

isn't always useful and sometimes it can hurt you to know. anyway

that is a tangent. Whatever you decide good luck. I think offical

DX requires money or state insurance. The university will only give

me an indication(not a DX) It is only for me as I said so I won't

apply for services.

This discussion has happened before but the government is like a

giant squid with many tenticles, I don't want to be ensnared by

them. It is a cycle that is difficult to break and is only a very

last resort. I prefer to decide the course of actions. The

government and services are all big brother and like a big brother

they intermingle themselves with you, so that you become some

composite. It terrifies me. It can threaten your children and your

future. While that is ok for a single person. My boat has others

aboard. I refuse to take anyone screaming with me. If I go I go

alone.
