Okay, Post-Ops--be Honest--- Who is really working out?

What is working for you? Cardio bores me to tears. I'd like to start

weight training, but have a little pooch in my belly that I think is

a wannabe hernia. Can I really do any serious weights without doing

core ab work?

As expected, my weight loss has slowed (I'm still losing about 5

pounds a month.) I'm 9 mos out and down about 115 pounds-- I'd like

to lose another 50 pounds. I want to jump start the weight loss and

firm up--- is making me look bad as she has just about reached

her goal--

I find from past experience that the harder I work out the more

likely I am to stay with it. Any suggestions on programs?

Thanks!

For the past month I've been finally getting back in the exercise

groove of things. I take my MP3 player with me and a book or

magazine. I normally walk 2-3 miles (40-60 minutes) on the

treadmill. With the help of the book/magazine it really does seem

like very little time has passed and I don't get as bored as I used

to. Then after the treadmill I use the exercise bike, normally I do

20 minutes and bike just over 7 miles or so. Then I finish up with

10 minutes on the elliptical machine. That thing kicks my butt, I

want to work up to 20-30 minutes on it eventually. On days where I'm

not really feeling like going to the gym, OR one of the few shows I

do watch on TV is on, I'll stay home and use my big exercise ball and

5 lb weights. Plus I have the resistance bands as well. I'll use

those while I'm watching TV. On the weekends I've been trying to get

out more and walk. I'm not sure where you live, but, I'm in Santa

Clara, CA. There's a big park/reserve not too far from my house.

There's tons of trails at all levels there. The weather has been

beautiful and I find that it's MUCH more fun walking/hiking there

than being in a gym. I also have a hernia, so I've been trying to

stay away from a lot of the weight machines. Anyhoo.. try magazines

or books to keep the boredom away!!! Hope this helps!

Jim,

You need some motivation, no make that a motivator. Since , our

exchange student, arrived in late August, she has just about taken over as

my personal trainer. We started going to a fitness center twice a week

where she sets up the treadmill for me. Started at a modest 2MPH, no

incline, for 15 minutes. Now up to 3MPH and a 4 degree incline for 30

minutes. (We're going to start modest curcuit training next week, but need

to avoid anything that will put additional stress on a developing hernia.)

That's the fitness center portion right now. Depending on my work

schedule, I either ride a bike to school with her in the morning and meet

her again in the afternoon (Tues/Wed/Thurs/Fri) or just meet her after

school (Mon). It's only a two mile or so ride one way, but doing that

twice a day and trying to keep up with a 17 year old that has one speed on

a bike, REAL FAST, and I tend to get a good workout.

We're going on a carribean cruise in a few weeks, five days, and I've

already been warned I will be putting in an hour a day on the treadmill

after she sets it up. What's the motivation? I get to dance the night

away with my " daughter " if I do. Otherwise, I sit and listen to the music.

Of course, when she turns on the " puppy-dog eyes " and that cute smile,

even laughs and says I'm stuck with the program. LOL

Forgot to mention, also has me starting to learn German and planning

a number of day trips where we can just walk and see the scenery. Places

like Point Reyes, Muir Woods, Monterey, Santa Cruz, etc.

Yup.. You need a motivator. I know an exchange student group that is

looking for host families for next school year. ;-))

Hi Jim... I have been going to the gym off and on... for the past year and a

half. My suggestion... find a personal trainer to set up a routine for you

incorporating different types of exercise. even join a jazzercise group - and

occassionally have a check-up with him to see if your routine is doing what you

want it to do. I find exercise helps with depression as well as general

physical strength, etc. now- if I could just be a little more consistent...

I can't believe it either....Yeah, Dec 4 will be fine, but your a day ahead

of me....My anniversary will be Dec 6th(I will be in Gatlinburg Tn for the

festival of lights parade) so the first week in Dec will be awesome for me.

My goal will be back to basics.....All my water, one soda (diet) a

day,at least one protein shake a day. I think if I cando that it will help. Of

course Christmas will have to be slightly lenient, but if I can stay good for 3

weeks before then I can pig out a few days....LOL.

I get so bored with exercise, I try to walk but it is hard to get to

the track and I hate the treadmill even more.

I guess I will go to Tivo and watch the sharpei man and see what they

did with his skin.....He looked really funky in the commercial, like he was

slithering around in his skin.....I DON " T want to lose that much! 199 would be

a dream come true.

Mel,

I didn't realize that I was a day older than you in DS life. I thought you'd

already been switched when I went into surgery.

OK. Let's wait until 8 December. That will have me though all the study for

finals (finals start that day--I have THREE on 8 December!!!).

I made another pumpkin pie today. I figured out the calorie count and by

using canned pumpkin, making it according to that recipe but using Splenda,

it comes out to about 75-100 calories per slice. That means, if I plan the

day right, I can eat the whole pie -- providing I eat nothing else! LOL I

actually plan to eat like a pig tomorrow. Turkey, dressing, baked beans,

cranberry sauce and lot's of toilet paper in the bathroom. LOL Oh, yeah, and

Pumpkin Pie!!! I even made whipped cream with splenda, so I can have my pie

and eat it, too.

Jim

Who will be very uncomfortable this time tomorrow.
