Did you have a lot of liver damage going into treatment, Mel..? I have to wonder if they don't mess up our systems further by all of the medications that they give.. Especially, since everything we take has to filter through the liver.. Melodee <melodeedestefano@...> wrote: I understand that they said that my ammonia levels were high when I was in the hospital. When I asked what for they said to protect my organs. Give me a break. Why can't they just say that my ammonia is high and we want you to see if you can tolerate the lactilose???I have to do all this research on my own to figure out what the hell is going on. And sort out what was going on while I was in the hospital and all the waky medicatins they were screwing up. Like my Librium and amitriptylene (sp).I feel that I have to be informed for these specialists appointments.I have taken like everything to take for tonight that can calm me down. NADDA I am still wide awake.Mel

Lactalose is to get rid of the ammonia that builds up in your intestines and goes to your brain which gives you confusion. (encephalpathy). They adjust Lactulose to each individual person, it usually isn't based on ammonia levels in your blood, they do it as per your confusion levels. Proteins should be gone out of your diet as they cause a great amount of ammonia, a dietician is a really good bet when you deal with ammonia. Latulose is a sugar based syrup that gives you bowel movements to lower ammonia levels. It's a very good thing to use if adjusted to you properly, your doctor should be reccomending a certain amount of bowel movements a day depending upon your ammonia level and or confusrion. Hope that explains Lactulose.
